EIGHT PAGES. DAILY EAST OREGONIAN, PENDLETON. OREGON, THURSOAV, MAY 31, 1806. PAGE THREE. u AUCTIONTOWNSITES GOVERNMENT PROVIDES FOR IRRIGATION CENTERS. 1 Utreo TouiiMltra oil .Minidoka I rrt na tion ProJot to lie Sold at Auction During Moiuli of .In no Over 2000 Acre In Throe True! Waste In Southern Idaho Ih Now Being Made Ittiuly to HIimiiii. Home time during the montli of June the Interior department will of fer for wile about 2000 acres of land contained In three townsltes situated In the heart of a great tract of 130, 000 acres of rich and fertile agricul tural land which will he watered by the Minidoka project In Idaho, a great national Irrigation work, costing 12, 00,000. The towiiHltPH are all platted with wide street and boulevardH, with parks, and extensive areas re served for public buildings. The lots are to be disposed of to the highest bidders for cash. They look suffi ciently desolate, and forlorn now; but with the opening of the canal head gates, they will bloom forth luxuri antly. H Under the wise provisions of the reclamation act all the agricultural lands have been cut Into farms of 40 and 80 acres, so that the Instant the lands are brought under cultivation this tract now covered with sagebrush will become one of the most densely populated farming communities In the country. Its prosperity Is assured by the splendid water supply furnish ed by the big government canals and ditches, ami this prosperity Is a guar antee of the future success and sub stantial growth of the towns which Uncle r'am proposes to foster there. The proceeds from the auction sales will be returned to the "Irrigation fund." It requires a visit to this section to appreciate the wonderful transform ation which follows the construction of one of these groat Irrigation pro jects of the government. Two years ago the Minidoka country was an un inhabited sagebrush plain. The rail road was miles away from it, and It seemed destined forever to serve only as a haunt of the Jackrabblt and the skulking coyote. Klver Difficult to Harness. Far below the plain, the Snuke river cut Its way through a canyon, the rugged escarpment rising above the swift flowing river, and offering no opportunity for the pioneer with his simple ditch to lead the water out upon the thirsty soil. Only skilled engineers backed by vast capltul eould cope with such a proposition as this. Many engineers without the necessary wherewithal had looked at It, but Its great cost had forced them to give it up. With the passage of the reclamation act on June 17, 1902, one of these engineers who had Joined the government force rushed a field party to this point and in a single season prepared and presented a set of plans for a comprehensive system of Irrigation. They were accepted and bids were asked and contracts awarded for construction. To Irrigate this broad expanse of plain the Snake river must be lifted from Its bed. A dam was laid across the stream at Minidoka rapids, a great rock-fill structure 50 feet In height and 650 feet long on top, which raised the water surface 47 feet at flood level and backed It up for 35 miles. The dam completed will cost nearly $500,000. When the Immense gates In the diversion channel are lifted the water will pass Into the high line canals on both sides of the river, and be led from them through hundreds of miles of laterals to every farm In the valley. Ifcuvcr Will Show the Order a Good Time In July. When the Elks go to Colorado to attend their annual reunion next July they will ride over the highest rail road In the world, says the Denver Post. There Is a Hue called the "Mof fat Road," now being built from Den ver to Suit Lake, over which the Elks are planning to take the members of the order on an official excursion, and this rond, after running 60 miles from Denver, reaches an altitude of 11,660 feet, which mokes Jt the high est standard gauge railroad in the world. The members of the Order of Elks will see a climatic paradox which is possible nowhere olsc on earth, when they are entertained by the trip over this line. They will see huge banks . f snow laying along the railroad tracks In the summer time, and will be ablo to engage In snowballing un der the blazing July sky. The west has many wonderful scenes to offer visitors, but this, perhaps, Is the most wonderful of all, as there is no place In the world so near a large city where the phenomena of summer snowballs on a railroad train more than two miles above the sea level, can be found. From all reports It looks as though Ym irroitteMt fraternal gathering In the world will assemble In Denver July 16, when tne annual reunion oi sm .oa A fortune has been contribut ed by the Elks of Colorado to supply hospitality to their guests. The Elks who go from this state are sure to be given the glad hand. wn take a doien thing to our that cough T Kennedy'! The Fair Department Store Pendleion, Oregon, WESTON CIRCULAR ISSUED 1IY PEOPLE OF WESTOX. Voters of the State Are Urged to Sus tain the Appropriation Rill Which Iiuindi'H the FxponwH of tlio Wes ton Normal KaNtcrn Oregon Enti tled to Ona State Inxtitutlon. The people of Weston have pre pared a circular letter urging the vot ers of Oregon to sustain the appropri ation bill of the last legislature now before the people for a referendum vote. The pica eloquently sets forth the claims of Weston, and is as follows: A Square Deal for Eastern Oregon's Only State Institution, the State Normal School at Weston. This Is the only state Institution that heeded the voice of the people im;l suspended operation to await ac tlm of the referendum, while all others I'Hitlnued to run. The time Is near at hnnd when the lieoplc may decide, not whether the state shall pay her Just obligations, but Bhall she pay now or continue to pay Interest Indefinitely, on all her outstanding warrants. The sustaining of the referendum will not settle the question as to the number of Normal schools in the state. While It may be conceded that a loss number of Normal schools prop erly equipped and maintained might supply the demand for such institu tions, yet It is not conceded that east ern Oregon with her vast inland em pire, contributing one-fourth the rev enue to the state, shall be deprived of her only public Institution. It Is hoped that the next legisla ture will settle the matter as to the number of schools, and put them un der one management. It Is the opinion of all who have given the matter any consideration that, from Its geographical situation, the Eastern Oregon State Normal school Is admirably located, and hav ing the best plant In the state, should be maintained. The teachers whose salaries have not been paid; The Alumni of the school; The young men and women stu dents of the school, who were look ing forward to graduating day, and friends of education generally, solicit your vote to sustain the appropriation act. The questlrn will be submitted to the voters on the official ballot at the coming election and will be numbered 300. To sustain appropriation act, make your X In front of 300.
