Of the losses on Main street by far the heaviest is that Incurred by lia--ker and Folsom, furniture dealers. At the very outset of the flood the large basement used by that firm and the Fair store was completely filled with water. Baker & Folsom had furniture valued at 17000 stored In their basement, and they declare It will be an absolute loss, as the stock will be completely ruined. However, their main store was unharmed, as was also their undertaking chapel. The Fair store lost about J 700 worth of goods In their basement, nothing whatever being saved. Also, the Peoples Warehouse is loser through goods that were damaged In their basement, while lesser losses were sustained by other merchants. The basement of the Hotel Pendle ton Is filled with water, thus render ing the furnace useless. As a result the hostelry has been without steam today, as has also the Smith-Crawford and the Judd buildings. Rubber Boots Popular. ( At an early hour this morning those who were viewing the flood be gan a run upon the stock of rubber boots, and for several hours the clerks In the Main street stores were busy fitting men, women and children with footwear suitable for the sudden change In the streets. Reminder of '82. Throughout the day many of the elder residents o( the city have re vived the memories of the famous flood of 1882, when practically the entire town was flooded by a sudden rise of the Umatilla river. However, the flood that year occurred In Feb ruary instead of May, and at that time there was no levee to curb the tor rent Cabs and Teams Busy. This has been a good day for the cabs. It beat a celebration for busi ness. Since early this morning every available cab and delivery team In the city has been busy hauling refu gees to higher ground. When people began to feel that It might be a serious flood, everybody ordered a load of wood or coal and the fuel offices have been overwhelm All Streams Swollen. Reports to the city at noon from Pilot Rock say that all the streams hi that vicinity are swollen and many wagon bridges are washed out. The Meacham Creek country has been visited with a terrible rainstorm and every canyon carries a roaring tor rent of water. Rain has fallen steadily on the mountains for the past 38 hours and McKay creek. Birch creek, Tutuilla, Wild Horse and all the streams flow ing Into the Umatilla are higher than for years and when their volume Is Don't Have Dis tressing Dyspepsia When your food distresses you don't neglect yourself. Indigestion causes the distress and unless you aid your digestive organs the conditions be come chronic. Our F & S Dyspepsia Tablets should be taken after each meal. They stimulate the digestive organs and Increase the flow of gastric Juices, These tablets cure Indigestion and any ordinary case of dyspepsia. For sale by Tallman & Co. LeadingDruggists I added to the Umatilla, the latter be comes a raging torrent. There Is little report of serious damage In any of the outside points. Many families on McKay creek moved their bomes to higher ground and gardens and roads are destroyed, but aside from this there Is little damage at this time. Several huts along Meacham creek have been washed away and several hundred cords of wood from near Huron has been floated down to Pendleton today, and Is passing on Its way to the Colum bia.' No Decoration Day. Needless to say all plans for the Decoration Day ceremonies have been abandoned as a result of the flood. No attempt was made by members of the G. A. R. to decorate the graves in the cemetery, the veterans and the public preferring to await a more fa vorable occasion. Also the forenoon meeting arranged for the Frazer theater was abandoned for the reason that the flood furnished a stronger attraction. As the Matlock grounds have been flooded and surrounded by water the only athletic meet possible this after noon would be a rowing race. The meet has been given up entirely and the athletes from Baker City will re turn as soon as railway connections make such possible. The team from La Grande was to reach here on No. 6 last night but as that train did not come further west than La Grande, the boys could not leave their homes. Furnish Ditch Damaged. A 'phone message . received from Echo this morning stated that the Furnish ditch had been washed out for a distance of two miles at the head of the same. The river at that place was running high and the road above (own was flooded, The wagon bridge across the river had become badly shaken by the torrent and the use of the same was prohibited. - Owing to washouts In the track just east of Echo No. 6, the eastbound morning train was held at that place. Great Vigilance Exercised. At the first hint of danger this morning Mayor James A. Fee began a personal patrol of the levee on horseback, and directed the repairs of the weak places and kept the peo pie thoroughly posted on the situa tion. With him was a small army of men on horseback, watching the river and ready to warn the people at the first Intimation of actual danger'from a break of the levee. ed with business all day. The supply of wood In the yards was very light and all the teams have been busy de Ilverlng wood to every portion of the city where people felt secure. Orders for groceries were also mul tlplled this morning, showing that every family on high ground had guests and must needs replenish the supply of provisions. The delivery teams have been rushed all day and many orders have been delayed until late this evening. Took Refuge in High School. The school board ordered assembly hall and the high school building thrown open to the public this morn ing and a large number of people took refuge there this forenoon. Bun dles of bedding, clothing, trunks and other movables have been unloaded there and It resembles Castle Garden this afternoon, with Its plies of goods and Its occupants huddled about the stoves. Bridge in Alfalfa Fluid. The small county bridge In the lane Just east of the main wagon bridge east of the hospital, has been washed out into an alfalfa field below the road, where It Is now lying. A num ber of horses have been drowned In the vicinity of the race tracks, It is reported at noon. Serious Flood at Walla Walla. Walla Walla, May 30. Bridges are washed out, houses wrecked, streets flooded, electric and telephone sta tions out of commission and thous ands of dollars of damage done to growing crops In the lowland districts Is the result of the worst rain in the history of Walla Walla valley, which steadily fell since noon, Monday, and is still falling at the rate .05 Inches per hour. The total precipitation was 3.20 Inches at 9 o'clock this morning, with no Indications of any break. Mill creek and Walla Walla river are pouring over their banks. Bust ness is practically suspended. Clin ton, Park and Sixth street bridges went out early this morning. Mill creek overflowed Its bank at Morrlam street early this morning. A big stream of water Is now flow ing down Alder street through the business district. Many residences are flooded in Spring Grove addition, and the people were compelled to seek safety.
