A part of the campaign fund raised by the Oregon Liquor Dealers' asso ciation has reached Pendleton to be used to defeat legislative candidates opposed to a modification of the local option law, according to the best In formation that can be secured today. Unusual activity In the local associ ation has been noticed yesterday and today, a list of registered voters is being secured by the association and an active campaign is being opened. How much of the fund has been re ceived from Portland la not known, but It has been said in Portland that 110,000 would be sent to Umatilla county to defeat Walter Pierce and Dr. C. J. Smith, candidates for the state senate, because of their vigorous defense of the local option law In the last legislature. This la to be the campaign issue In this and other eastern Oregon counties. Literature is being circulated In large quantities throughout the state, both in favor of the liquor dealers' amendment to the local option law and against the equal suffrage amend ment A decisive fight is to be waged against every man who is not Indorsed by the liquor Interests as "safe, Every effort will be made to secure a legislature favorable to the repeal or modification of the local option law and political party lines. will be en tirely swept away In this effort All the saloons In the county will be enlisted In this campaign and It Is hoped by them that by a united effort a legislature can be secured which will admit of a less rigid local option law, than that now In force. TAKING BAR EXAMINATION'S. Four Applicants Are Before Supreme Court This Week. Since the convening of the sun rem, court in this city four applicants for admission to the bar have appeared. They are O. C. Edwards, United States Indian agent: Clalren L. Smith, of Ba ker City; J. W. Huff, principal of the Pendleton high school; and Miss Ada F. Edwards, sister of Major Edwards. Pitt, a traveling man of Spo kane, who passed through the city last evening, was crossing San Fran cisco bay upon a steamer when the recent earthquake occurred. It was some time before the passen gers learned of the terrible destruc tion wrought in San Francisco. In describing the scene while the city was burning at night Mr. Pitt de clared It was much like an Immense painting of the burning of a city, only it was a living thing insteud of on a canvas. He remained awake one en tire night watching the tlamej. Other people he saw sleeping In the streets or parks while the noise of the fire and the blowing up of the buildings was ut its height. The sleepers were almost dead with exhaustion. "It was a fine sight to see the man ner in which the sufferers were cared for on their arrival In Oakland,' says Mr. Pitt. "Whenever a load ar rived from across the bay, he says they were Invited to eat at temporary counters erected In the streets, and all were fed without cost. Such treat ment he declares gladdened the hearts of the sufferers, and In many cases gave people courage to stand up un der their losses." ART EXHIBIT PROGRAM. Books Clone on May 15 Only About 50 Regixtered In Pendleton. Since the opening of the registra tion books following the recent prl mary election business has been dull with Registry Clerk Nelson. Thus far only about BO voters have registered from Pendleton and consequently It looks like a light registration for the June election. However, business may pick up between now and the close of registration on May IS. No reports have yet been received from other points In the county, and so It is not known how fast the vot ers are registering there, but It is doubtful If there is any more progress being made than in Pendleton. PENDLETON ACADEMY NOTES. Picnic of the Beta Epstlon Society Clones Year's Work. The last program of the Beta Ep sllon society of Pendleton academy, consisting of a mock trial, has Just been held, followed by a delightful picnic at the home of S. K. Yates on McKay creek, four miles west of the city. The students and Invited friends of the academy rode to the Yates home in a hayrack, about 45 being In the party, which was chaperoned by Prof, and Mrs. W. H. Bleakney. FINED $250 EACH. Cattlemen Pleaded Guilty to Fencing Government Land. Before the federal court at Port land recently Frank Hubert, J. L. Beckhausen and C. L. Sparf pleaded guilty to the charge of fencing govern ment land. Thereupon Judge Wolv erton Imposed 1250 fine upon each which amount was paid. The three men were represented In court by Col J. H. Raley. All three of the above men were indicted some time ago for fencing government land, and while awaiting trial were on ball of 11000 each. Now 'Phone Directory. The P. 8. T. & T. Co., are making up a list for a new directory to be is sued about June 1. They request that patrons wishing changes or duplica tion of names, or for advertising space in the book, report at once to Manager Burford or to Jack Hus ton, the printer. As an advertising medium the dlrecotry has been sanc tioned by the Business Men's league, and hereafter will be revised and Is sued every four months. LfTermore to Salt Lake. L. Bush Llvermore, son of Post master Lot Llvermore, of this city has gone from Baker City to Salt Lake to take a position with th. Salt Lake Herald, one of the leading pa pers of the Mormon capital, Mr. Llvermore Is a capable newspaper man ana wm nnd an excellent field for his abilities In Utah. He has re cently been connected with the Boise Statesman. O. K. Feed Yard Not Sold. Lee Kennard has not bought the O. K. feed yard, as announced yes terday. C. E. De Graff Is conducting the business, and says It Is not for ale. He enjoys an excellent country patronage and his friends will be glad to know he has not sold the business. Mounted Elk Returned. The large mounted elk belonging to the Swinburne family and which traced the Umatilla county exhibit at the Lewis & Clark fair, has been re turned to Pendleton and la now on display in the Rader furniture store. I'., to Meet Trustees From Knight! of Pythias Building Site at Corner f Main and Water Streets' May Be Utilized. To discuss the proposition of Jointly constructing a lodge hall and theater building In this city a committee from Integrity lodge I. O. O. F. and the trustees of Damon lodge No. 4, Knights of Pythias, will meet this eve ning. The Idea of co-operating with the Knights In the erection of such a building at the corner of Main and Water streets was broached by Integ rity lodge a week or more ago. At that time they appointed a com mittee consisting of W. H. McCorm mach, J. T. Brown and G. I. La Dow to act for them. In return the Knights of Pythias Instructed the trustees of the lodge, T. O. Montgom ery, T. M, Henderson and C. E- Troul man to receive any offer the Odd Fellows desired to make. The Knights of Pythias own the lot at the corner of Main and Water and as Integrity lodge Is also desirous of securing a building It Is proposed that the two lodges act together In erecting the building. However, nothing whatever has yet been done In the matter. The local Woodmen camp Is also figuring upon the erection of a lodge building within the near future and should the Knights of Pythias not co operate with Integrity lodge, they may do so Instead. SUPREME COURT AT WORK. Extended Arguments Consume Almost Entire Afternoon. But few cases have been disposed of by the supreme court today, as there have been some extended argu ments. Almost the entire forenoon was consumed with the arguments in the case of Sarah Jennings and hus band vs. the Oregon Land & Water company. The case Is from Morrow county and was argued by W. A. Mun- ly for the appellant and by C E, Woodsen for the respondent. Up to 3 o'clock this afternoon the following cases had been argued and submitted: State of Oregon and W. L. Gibson vs. County Court of Malheur county; Anna Oliver vs. Fred Syn horst, street superintendent of La Grande. Road Roller to Atliena. The county road roller will be taken to Athena this evening by Geo. Buzan, who runs the roller for the county. It will be shipped to Athena on the O. R. & N., since so many bridges are too light to bear the weight of the monster machine if It were run by Its own steam along the county roads. Macadamizing will be done in the vicinity of T. J. Kirk's home in Athena. Road Cases Are Heard. During the past two days the mem bers of the county court have been listening to the arguments in a road case from the Holdman country. At torneys Collier and Newberry are rep resenting the opposing factions. Painting Court House. Painters are now at work upon the last coat for the exterior of the court house. The finishing color Is white and the appearance of the building will be greatly improved when the work Is done. Artisans, Take Notice.
