Allen, superintendent of the Wallowa river fish hatchery, was In Elgin the fore part of this week, nays the Elgin Recorder. Mr. Allen Is well satisfied w ith hlg work thus far nt the hatchery anil Is very enthusiastic ns to the future outlook. A few days ago he liberated 1.000.000 young fish In the Waliown liver that were from an Inch to two Inches long. He still re tains another l.nno.ono In the batcherv building and will keep these for sever al weeks yet. This Is Indeed a very good showing and the work of this hatchery under Mr. Allen's supervis ion has a bright future. Abe Miller, Justice of the peace of Pilot Rock, came In from Colfax lust evening, where he has been visiting his daughters for several days. M. T. Nolan, register of The Dalles land office, was In the city this morn ing for a short time on his return from the eastern part of the state. Dr. C. J. Smith, candidate for state senator, and Cecil R. Wade, candidate for representative, went to Weston to day In the Interests of their candida cies, W. D. Chamberlain, candidate for Joint representative for 1'matllla and Morrow counties, left this morning for Weston in the Interest of his can didacy. Mrs. C. M. Rnder and Miss Burr, of Walla Walla, will arrive this evening and will leave tomorrow for Ohio and other states In the middle west upon a visit.' T. C. He will be In direct charge of the reserve. CLEARING THE SNAKE CHANNEL Will Remove Ininionio Itoiililcrs 25 Miles AImivc Asotin. Captain Wlnslow, of the dredge Wallowa, yesterday received orders from Colonel Roessler, who Is 111 charge of the government liver and hnrhor Improvements of the north west, to leave tomorrow morning for Fisher's bar. 25 miles above Asotin, on the Snake river, says the Lewiston Tribune. The dredge will remove the big boulders In the channel there which makes iiaviirt-tlon dangerous. The dredge will be out for 10 days. returning here May 15. The rocks were carried out into the channel during a cloudburst two years ago. nnd the larger boats on the river have considered them too dangerous to attempt to pass unless the river was at tilt; highest stage. The dredge worked beyond these boulders last summer nnd did not attempt to clean the channel nt Fisher's bar on account of the low water. It might be neces sary to blast some of the rocks to loosen them In which ense they will be rolleJ to some of the deen T places In the river. These dangerous boulders nre situ ated about 10 miles this side of the big sheep shearing camps along the Snake liver and when removed the stream will be afe for the largest hints on the river. The sheepmen will then be ennbled to market their wool through Lewiston. To Huve Charge of Mining. The secretary of the Interior has authorized the appointment of Dr. David T. Day ns honorary director of the department of mining of the Jamestown exposition, the board of governors of that company having conferred that position upon him. Dr. Day Is chief of the division of min ing and minernl resources of the United States geological survey. Stockmen's Meeting.
