The Billings Gazette prints the fol lowing review of the recent cold spell In the state of Montana: The recent cold spell of weather gave rise to the fear that' there may have been considerable loss among the stock In the high land ranges of the county and vicinity. So far the re ports have all been favorable and it is believed that the stockmen of this section of the country escaped practi cally unscathed. Tom Hogan, superintendent of the GENERAL XEWS. The collection consists of about 200 pic tures ln reproduction of the world's greatest masterpieces of architecture, sculpture and painting. The plctur-s are alike Interesting to all ages and classes of 'people, and enthusiastic ex pressions of appreciation are heard on all sides. Beginning with the Pike street side of the annex to the hall the pictures are arranged chronologically and grouped geographically, following the east, north and west walls, fund fin ishing with comparatively modern English and American n,rt on the en trance side of the hall. The collection has a distinctly edu cational purpose In view, being ar ranged to show the development of art from the pyramids and temples of Egypt through the fine old classic architecture and sculpture, Italian painting, Dutch, French. Spanish, English and American. Most of the pictures are reproduced In enrbon process, but there are a few engravings and o group of color work representing the drawings of modern German artists made originally on stone. There are also two Intensely brilliant Venetian pictures, one of St. Mark's cathedral, and the other a scene along the picturesque canal. The pictures are most interesting and are the finest collection of their kind ever shown In this town. Genuine artistic merit Is the quality for which they have been chosen and the selection has been made by some of the most eminent art critics of this country. The pictures themselves are not on sale, nor are orders solicit ed, but prices may be learned at the door, and orders left with those ln charge will be filled. The stock show recently held in Denver was of Ahe greatest benefit to the rangers, say tha correspondent of Field and Farm. Extensive experi ments were made ln connection with the stock show which was an object lesson to every cattleman who attend ed It. One of the most important things was the experiment in. the pro duction of baby beef. This is something comparatively new in the west, but It Is of marked Interest to the stockgrowers. The yearling calves from 6 to 9 months of age ar- taken off the milk and put on the corn and alfalfa. This makes beef while they are growing, and by the time they are yearlings past they are ready for the market. Baby beef Is undoubtedly the best put on the market, and means a sav ing of thousands of dollars to range people, and at the same time gives the consumers a better product. The sheepmen long ago saw the advantage of this and for years past have been putting lambs on the market In the same manner. The livestock men In the west are handling their stock as they did years ago. It has been their system to range cattle until they are 4 years of age. and then market them, but 'I think. the experiments in the production of baby beef will be adopted by a number of the leading livestock companies In the intermountalr. region. For instance. It was also shown that calves taken off milk and put on proper food grew rapidly in flesh. When the calves were 8 and 9 months old they weigh ed S00 pounds and sold for $40. A calf up to the time It is a year atid a half old can be fattened at n cost of $3.50 per cwt., while a 2-year- old steer can be fattened at a cost of $7.50 per cwt. It is figured that It costs $11 a cwt. to fatten a 3-year-old steer and $17 to fatten a 4-year-old steer. These figures show conclusive ly that It would be to the advantage of any stockman to put his calves on the market when they are yearlings and it has been prpved by experiments that It is the best beef. There Is no reason why the stock men of Colorado, Wyoming. L'tah Idaho and the other surrounding states could not produce this kind o beef for market. menced at once for the work. Georee H. I opened auspiciously yesuHrrtrty with' an'1 Aside from growing enormous quantities of apples and strawberries, Hood River Is also becoming one of the leading cherry districts of tie world. California cherry orchnrdj are deteriorating and Oregon Is now the leading cherry producing section of the Pacific coast. The Hood River Glacier, ln review ing this new fruit Industry In the Hood River district, says: While apples and strawberries have been considered the greatest money making crops that could be raised ln the fruit line ln Oregon there Is a possibility that cherries may In the very near future be In the front rank as money getters. One of the most prolific cherry growing sections In this country has been California, and fruit of fine qual ity and plenty of It has heretofore been raised there. In fact It has sup plied the western and some of the eastern markets with this fine fruit for a number of years and has receiv ed very profitable returnc from them. Reports are now to the effect that the cherry orchard of California are fast disappearing and' thnt they will not be able this year, to come any where near supplying the demand. Buyers have been scouring the Cali fornia cherry growing districts and making contracts for fruit and have Invaded Portland also with a view to obtaining ns large a supply as pos sible there fro mthe commission men. This wick California parties were ln Portland trying to moke a deal with Davenport Bros., the well know. commission men there, for no less than 60 tons of cherries at almost the' own price. This firm could not prom Ise to supply any such quantity and say that they will be very fortunate If they are able to supply 30 tons. The cherry trees In California arc said to have been deteriorating for a number of years and the climate there Is not. it is stated, conducive to the long life of the trees. While author Itles here on the profits of growing cherries differ. It is very evident there must be good money in them when buyers can afford to purchase them from the commission men In Portland and reship them to other points. It is said that over 100 acres of cherry trees have been set out In Th" Dalles ln the past year or two and that growers there expect to make them a very profitable Investment. There Is no question about disposing of the product of cherries or of get ting good prices for them. The main difficulty experienced by Hood River growers has beeii in keeping the trees from dying. It would seem that there ought to be some method of counter acting the effects of the diseases that kill these trees If the matter was gona into as thoroughly and scientifically as ha the growing of apples.
