BUYS HIDES OF SMYRNA. lulled Scales Imports Large Quant I tlcs of Long Wool Also. Consul Norton furnishes a state ment from Smyrna In reply to a Bos ton inquiry as to the trade there In wool, goat and sheep skins, and sau sage casings, as follows: "What wool Is produced around Smvrna is chiefly woven into rugs and carpets and thus largely exported. However, wool exports ore growing, 225 long tons going out In 1!03, 7G0 tons in 1904 and of the 1905 exports 740 tons were exported to the United States, the balance going to Belgium his rnllrond Job and took up a home stead in Grant county. He sold that a year or so ago, and a year ago he bought the Uklah hotel and livery sta ble for 12500. During the year he hns owned It ho has cleared $2400, or within $100 of the purchase price. Recently he refused $4000 for the place. This is but one Instnnce of how a nun can do better for himself thnn de-ondnr on wages. Pi-t'L' in Many Lines. Take Ckiuh from another stand point: Rough lumber Is sold at the mill at Uklah for $8 per 1000. In Pen dleton the same lumber Is sold for $22 per 1000. When the railroad comes Into this section It will double the price of the timber lands. There Is considerable excellent timber on Des olation creek, Hldoway, Texas Bar basin and tho foothills. Much of this land may still be purchased for $2.60 an acre. It is an excellent Investment, much better thnn plantations in Jalisco or wheat land In the Texas panhandlo. Two timber cruisers, representing a Minneapolis firm, spent 17 days In here recently trying to sign up tin ber at 90 cents per 1000 stumpaga. It is thought they ore planning to put up a sawmill on the John Day, where saw logs from the John Day, Bridge creek. Desolation creek and Texas Bar bosin are tributary to the mill. To show how cheaply good tim ber lands may be purchased, the two Arbogast boys, Ora and Am, who own a quarter section each, of deeded land In the Texas Bnr basin, which will run about a million and a half feet per quarter, are offering their claims for sale; one at $600 and the other et $650. Hope for tlie Fntnre. Cattle, dairying, timber will make the Camas Prairie a great country some day. ItB present disadvantage Is that It is 43 miles from a railroad, with a hard pull over the mountains, and during the winter the stage used a sled for three months and 10 days, but the railroad's coming would put It In touch with the world and glvo a market for its lumber, coal, butter, cheese, hay and other products. But now before the advent of the Iron horse Is the time for one to get a good place at ridiculously low prices. FRED LOCKLKY. ..i.,,' !,. " himuir ' and Great Britain. Tho following Smyrna houses are the wool exporters: Alfred A. Keun A Co., D. & J. Malnetty, A. Lavlno & Co., Hercule Batti, and J. E. Athanassla des. "The annual exportation of goat and sheep skins amounts to about $1100 tons, valued at over $250,000. .Most of these go i J Austria-Hungary. The United States bought last year 35 tonr. worth $11,000. CorkU'.hl. Tho first two almost mo nopolize the trade. "The export of sausage casings (shetp guts) is small, amounting to $2300, of which $751 covered ship ments to the United States." Ukliih. Ore.. April 25. For years there has been considerable govern ment land enclosed in Camas Prairie, Just n.i is the case in the Juniper coun try and In the vicinity of Varisycie. The recent visit of the government In spectors has resulted In mile after mile of government land being thrown open to public settlement and mile of wire fence rolled up that has been used to enclosethe public domain. One stockman alone rolled up seven miles of fence that he had been using around government land. The throwing open of this land l. bound to have beneficial effect upon the settlement of the country. The stockmen who have been using this land Illegally for their cattle are com plaining bitterly, but the small settler and the man who Is desirous of mak lng actual settlement upon the land is the gainer by the gcyernment's nctlon. GMid IjiikI Vacant. Much of this land is excellent land and "the lundless man and tho man less land" enn confe together with mutual benefit. If some enterprising real estate man, Instead of Investing his money In Alberta, Idaho, Texas or Mexican lands, would come to Camas Prairie and Snipe valley and secure options, good for a year, on a large body of land here, he could clean up a hut full of money. Hut farthest fields are ever greenest and opportunities right here In Uma tilla county are being overlooked. An energetic real estate man could read ily sign up 25,000 acres of land In here at from $5 to $10 an acre, then. go east. Jacob Born, who has Jived on his ranch for the past 19 years and be came well to do, has purchased a fruit farm 15 miles from Vancouver and Is I offering his farm of 1020 acres with the stock and Improvement for $15.-' 000. He has already sold his summer! range lands in the mountains. Mrs. Born, In speaking of the reason why they sold, said: "1 have been mllkins from 12 to IS cows for the last 19 years, and I want to have a little change and n rest; we don't have to work now. We are gctling to an a;te when we can afford to take It a little easier." Camas Prairie Is an ideal dairy country and If these large places were cut up into small farms. 80 acres to each farm, scores of thrifty dairymen could make good livings here. The trouble with most ranchers who have always owned larvre bodle.; of land is, they don't like to work at milking and such work, in f;.ct. they don't like to do any work that they can't do on horseback, while the thrifty middle west farmer Is more accustomed to potter around a small farm. If the railroad. Instead of waiting till the country is settled un. would come now, it would soon settle up, nnd it would he a splendid thing for the county gem rally. One Illustration. Fifteen years ago. when times were beginnlns: to get hard, n Walla Walla merchant decided to cut down ex penses. He had two oierns ana so Uncharged the least competent one. The discharged clerk after trying In vain to get a position In some other store donned his old clothes and took up a homestead. He weathered the hard times, bought out his neighbor as they became restless, and today he is worth $200,000. while the good clerk, who was retained, has been ad vanced from $60 a month to $75 a month, nnd Is still living in a rented house, as he has not been able to save enough money to buy one of his own. It Is strange that the mun who can never keep his nosefrotn the grind stone does not come out where he can take up a homestead.' If one would land cases.
