In a speech In congress this week he said: In the 12 so-called southern states, with a population of 21.713.000, In round numbers, there were in oper ation on January' 2, 1906, 8695 rural mall routes, while In the four rla'.es of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Kansas, with a population of 11.038.000, n round numbers, there were In opera tlon on the same date, 8510. These four states, with only half the population, have as many routes In operation as all of the southern states combined. Pash to manage the experi ment farm which the committee will work this season under the direction of Dr. Cooke. The farm will be seeded to several varieties of small grains, vegetables and forage crops, particularly dry land alfalfa. The Yellow Kids and the Spokane league team will cross bats at Athena Saturday, and Sunday they will meet on the Pendle- on diamond. The registration books show that North and South Athena are the only precincts in Umatilla county with democratic majorities. In some way the gasoline exploded and his hands were burned before he could make good his escape. Death of A. C. Unwell. A. C. Russell died at the Good Sa marltan hospital In Portland Friday of La Grippe, aged 71 years and three months. Mr. Russell sold his farm west of Athona to G. W. Hansen two years ago and has since been liv ing at Roseburg. He was born In Ohio and spent about 20 years of his life in Iowa, from which state he came to Oregon. He leaves a wife and three sons. The funeral took place In this city Monday. Mrs. Alf Johnson, of Pendleton, has been visiting friends In the city for some days. Last Saturday afternoon the child ren of the Baptist Sunday school were given a grand treat In the way of a straw ride. A four-horse team was hitched to a wagon on which was hay rack filled with straw on which were seated the large crowd of happy children.
