DOME IS DECENT Of Loxington, 1773, aiul of Baltimore, 1881. Baltimore. Md.. April 19. Today Is memorable day In the history of this country. Just 131 years ago the shot was fire at Lexington, which was heard around the world, and Just 45 years ago today Baltimore was the scene of an Important event In the his tory of the United States, the .attack upon the Sixth Massachusetts regi ment ns It was on Its way to Washing ton In defense of the union. There are quite a number of persons living In this city today who remember that April 19, nfcarly half a century ago. The country was In a turmoil then. Fort Sumter had been fired upon, the federal government had called for volunteers to put down the rebellion and the stars and bars had been run j up to replace the stars and stripes In many of the southern states. Balti more was a hotbed of secessionists then and, when the 'Washington au thorities attempted to pass armed men through the city, there was trouble. On the morning of April 19, the Sixth Massachusetts 'regiment and portions of the First and Second regi ments of Pennsylvania troops started across the city. They were greeted with hoots and Jeers and showers of missiles were hurled at them by the Immense throng of southern sym pathizers. A soldier's gun was acci dentally discharged, the mob made an assault and the soldiers fired a vol ley. Four soldiers and 12 citizens were killed and 36 soldiers and a great many citizens wounded. 1 IT PROPHECY? EARTHQUAKES DISCUSSED . . BY PORTLAND PAPER. In closing the review of the most destructive earthquakes the Journal said in speaking of the Charleston earthquake in 1886: "It may be 1000 years before another calamity like that of Charleston happens In this country." Within less than 12 hours after this review, the awful horror had visited San Francisco and eclipsed the Charleston calamity. The Journal said on Tuesday evening on the sub ject of "Earthquakes": Earthquakes have been far mo e destructive of human life and proper ty than local volcanic eruptions. Briefly stated, 13.000,000 people, as far as Is known and has been record ed, have perished from earthquakes, while the property loss exceeds com putation. All along the sinuous track of history we find records and stories of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. always coming suddenly and unex pectedly and creating dire consterna tion among the people. In former times these physical troubles of the Internal earth were re garded superstltlously, as visitations of the wrath of an offended deity, but this notion hns mostly disappeared. In the Lisbon earthquake. In 1755 6O.OD0 people disappeared. Japan is the seat of frequent earthquakes. South America Is the scene of many earthquakes, and of much volcanic action, the earthquake that partially destroyed Caracas In 1822 being nota ble. The destructive earthquake In Charleston, South Carolina, occurred in 1886, and Is really the only one of Consequence that has happened In the United States, although the earth haB trembled at various times and In many localities, and nobody can tell when or where the horror of Charles ton may be repeated. Yet It may be a thousand years before a calamity like that of Charleston happens In this country. Every short length in Wash Goods twelve yards and under .must go at just One-Half Price.
