SAX FRANCISCO'S HORROR. Pan Francisco In last night's earth quakes, yet suffilcent details are at hand to give something of the horror of the calamity. Proud. prosperous, progressive, elated with her vital activities, and happy in her continued growth. San Francisco stood the queen of the Pa cific. In a moment, her great blocks are toppled over, her immense Industries wiped out of existence, her people burled beneath the wreckage of their homes. It Is Inconceivable to those who are not on the ground to experi-' ence the extent of the horror. j But this will not check the growth of San Francisco. It did not check : Charleston. This gives almost as good service between New York and Portland as the Panama canal would afford. The transfer of the freight cargoes and the transportation over the 115 miles It might be Interesting to ask who is responsible for the presence of the vast hordes nf ignorant classes of for eign laborers ln the large titles and factory districts of the United States? Who has been In control of congress for the past 30 wears? Who has elected the Depews, the Aldriches, the Elklns, the Forakers, the Platts, the Spooners, the Burtons to the United States senate and who has applauded of the Tehauntepec road will require all their treachery to the country as but little time and slight expense, and ' splendid Illustrations of statesman ship? When you were a tadpole and I was a fish, In the Paleozoic time, And side by side on the ebbing tide We sprawled through the ooze and slime. Or skittered with many a caudal flip Through the depths of the Cam brian fen. My heart was rife with the Joy of life, Foral loved you even then. Mindless we lived and mindless we loved, And mindless at last we died; And deep in the rift of the Caradoe drift We slumbered side by side. The world turned on ln the lathe of time. The hot lands henved amain, Till we caught our breath from the womb of death, And crept into light again. We were Amphibians, scaled and tailed. And drab as a dead man's hand; We colled at ease 'neath the dripping trees, . Or trailed through the mud and sand, Croaking and blind, with our three- clawed feet Writing a language dumb. With never a spark In the empty dark To hint of a life to come. Yet hnppy we lived, and happy we loved, And hnppy we died once more: Our forms were rolled In the clinging mold Of a Neocomlan shore. The eons came, and the eons fled, And the sleep that wrapped us fast War riven away In a newer day, And the night of death was past. Then light and swift through the Jun gle trees We swung ln our airy flights, Or breathed In the halms of the fron- ded palms. In the hush of the moonless nights. And oh! what beautiful years were these, When our hearts clung each to each; When life was filled,, and our senses thrilled In the first faint dawn of speech. Thus life by life, nnd" love by love. We passe dthrough the cycles strange, , And breath by breath, and death by death, We followed the chain of change. Till there came a time in the law of life When over the nursing sod The shadows broke, and the soul awoke In a strange, dim dream of God. I was thewed like an Auroch bull. And tusked like the great Cave Fear; And you, my sweet, from head to feet, Were gowned In your glorious hair. Deep In the gloom of the fireless cave, When the night fell o'er the plain, And the moon hung red o'er the river bed. We mumbled the bones of the slain And that was a million years ago, In a lime that no man knows; Yet here tonight In the mellow light, Wo sit at Delmonlco's; Your eyes are deep as the Devon snrings, Your hair Is as dark as Jet. Your yenra are few. your life Is new, Your sold untried, and yet Our trail Is on the Klmmerldge clay, And the scarp of the Purbeck flag-?. We h."ve left our bones In the Bng- shot stones, ' And deep In the Coraline crngs; Our love Is old, our lives are old, And death shall come amain; Should It come today, what man may s'iy We phall not live again? ' God wi ought our souls from the Tre madoc beds And furnished them with wings to fly; He sowed our spawn in the world's dim dawn. And I know that It shall not die. Tho'igh cities have sprung above the graves Where the crook-bone men made war, And the ox-waln creaks o'er the burled caves Where the mummied mammoths are. Then as we linger nt luncheon hero, O'er many a dainty dish, Let ur drink anew to the tlmo when you Were a Tadpole nnd I was a Fish. Lnngdon Smith.
