Wells, residing at the "Palace," Main street, says: "Doan's Kidney Pills are a most excellent remedy for the back and kidneys and I heartily recommend them to anyone In need of such a medicine. For more than a year I suffered from Irregular action of the kidneys combined with dull heavy aching pains across my loins and back. When I stooped I had to be very careful in straightening up If I did not want to suffer severely. When I caught the least cold It in variably settled In my back and kid neys, and aggravated the complaint. I had little faith In Doan's Kidney Pills when I went to the Pendleton Drug JTo,'0 drug store for them, but they helped me from the first and a con tinuation of their use corrected the kidney difficulty and relieved the aching in my Lack and loins. I have recommended this remedy to others and know of several who have used them with the most satlsractory re sults." For sale by all dealers. Price (0 cents. RE-EQUIPPING THE GOLCONDA. New Machinery Will Be Followed by Extensions. The Blue Mountain American gives the following news of great Interest to many Umatilla county people: The first car of machinery for the Golconda. arrived this week and Is be ing transported to the mine. This lot comprises the three Chrlstensen con centrators and necessary parts and the mill plates should arrive Monday, their shipment being delayed a few days. From the mine Manager McCarthy advises that the power plant has been put In Al condition and will be In commission the coming week, when the main tunnel will be extended Into the Wide West ground. He stated the famous old property was looking fine and the ore body being developed of the new shoot south of the third cross-cut was establishing excellent reserves of milling ore. From Metallurgist Johnson the very Important Information was learned that after putting the mill In condl tlon and while waiting for the new machinery he began a thorough sam pllng of the old English dump and every assay showed that Its thousands of tons would pay to the mill and that Mr. McCarthy had determined to work the dump In the mill, reserving five stamps for that special purpose, There can be little doubt that the sys tematlc development, Improved mill Ing and careful, economical manage ment of the present management will meet with flattering success and very soon old Golconda will again be among the big producers of the fam ous Mother Lode of Sumpter district. TO START CATHOLIC Y. M. C. A. A Million Dollnr Trust Fund Will Back Movement. New York, April 16. A plan to es tablish In this country a national as sociation for Catholic young men on the lines of the Young Men's Christian association, has already taken defi nite shape and has the approval of Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishops Ire land, Farley and Ryan and the lead Ing Catholic laymen of the country. John D. Crlmmlns, Mayor Dunne, of Chicago; W. Bourke Cochran, Justice McKenna, of the United States su preme court; the Countess Leary and other wealthy Catholics have offered their aid In the movement. A million dollar trust fund bus been suggested as a foundation for the plan. The plans will be thoroughly discussed at B.-iHlmore Cathedral. It Is expected that a national committee will be formed at that time, to further dis cuss the matter and take the neces sary steps for carrying out the plan, The movement which has been agl tated for some time, and has been growing slowly in Importance, took definite shape, when the Paullst Fathers In West 59th street, came out publicly In favor of such an assocl atinn. The Paullsts are regarded as the leading exponents of American Catholicism, and have contended that wealthy American Catholics would support liberally a national move ment for young men. Just as others support the Young Men's Chrltslan association. The Paullst Idea Is to build one or more association buildings In each town, with the accessories and induce ments of club life library, reading room, baths, study room and a de partment of higher study, with com Drop by drop the sffenslve dls charge caused by Nasal Catarrh falls from the back of the nose Into the throat, setting up an Inflammation that Is likely to mean Chronic Bron chttles. Carson, aged 27 years, a brakeman on the Great Northern railway, fell between the cars about one ml!e west of Bonner's Ferry an was run over, cutting his right leg off at the hip. Mr. Carson had been in the employ of the company for, the last two years. The man will die. The Oregon Dally Journal gives the following review of the portage road situation, which is now considered serious unless the friends of the open river rally to the support of the Open River association, which Is endeavor ing to maintain a line of boats on the upper river, i The Journal says: Temporarily the portage road will be Idle, and the Open River Transpor tation company will discontinue the business of handling through freight from Portland to points on the upper Columbia. This condition has been brought about by the refusal of the Regulator line to handle the com pany's business through Three-Mile rapldf, the explanation being given that they are dangerous during the high water stage of the river. Officials of the Open River Trans portation company are of the opinion that the stand taken by the Regula tor line Is merely assumed for the purpose of throwing the traffic to the railroad company. It is declared that a strong sentiment has been In pro cess of development during the past few weeks against the Open River company, supposed to have been In stigated principally by the railroad Interests. If the railroads have no opposition. It Is pointed out, they will secure all the traffic Consequently It Is argued that it would be to their interert If the Independent boat line which Is being established were forced to abandon the route, and the sooner the better. The open river people are deetrm- ined to go ahead with their plans at all hazards. They are already nego tlatlng for other boats to transport freight from Portland to the portage road. 11 1b declared that there Is no danger whatever In sending boats through Three-Mlle rapids at any season of the year. The government has recently cleared the channel of all obstructions. Many of the river captains who are acquainted with the situation, say the channel Is perfectly safe. If It Is not, they are wonder ing at the great expense to which the federal government is going to build a canal around the obstruction at Ce lllo, for when that great waterway has been built, boats will still be obliged to go through Three-Mlle rapids. Until other arrangements have been completed the open river people will place the steamer Mountain Gem In service carrying freight to the con tractors who are building the railroad down the north bank of the Columbia. The Regulator Interests are willing to transport the freight for the open river men as far as The Dalles. When this fact became known, the former were thinking seriously of sending the freight the rest of the distance to the portage road by means of wagon teams, but later decided that the un dertaklng would be too expensive.'
