It Is amusing to hear men who have cursej the law enforcement move ment, claiming now to be heartily In favor of anything the people want in the line of law enforcement. This Is campaign time, you know. Men who are now running for of fice in Umatilla and other counties In the state, who stood aloof while the campaign for decency was at its height, are now posing as martyrs to the 'law enforcement movement. When there was something to do, a sacrifice to make, a decided stand to make, they stood aloof-and let others bear the brunt. Now they are out for office and must "stand in" with the PEOPLE. Hence, the many "reformers." The people are warned to look Into past actions of candidates and are urged to not accept campaign statements as true in every instance. The way to secure law enforcement Is to elect men who are In favor of law enforcement, not only In campaign times, but at all times. The law en forcement people should not be hood winked by politicians. Men who fought against the law enforcement movement, are now before the people for office and are making claims of friendship and Interest In this move ment. Politics should not blind the people to the true status of the candidate on this riuestion. The people of the coun try districts, who are interested In the suppression of gambling, which ruins their boys and demoralizes their hired help, should ascertain the truth about candidates who are now mak ing loud statements as to what they will do when elected. The time to try a man is when his side Is weak and failure threatens him. If he stands to the guns under those circumstances, he can be trust ed. Put if he shirks the duty of citi zenship when it costs a sacrifice to perform that duty, and warms up to decency only when It Is popular, be careful of him. He has a scheme. OREGON IN CONGRESS. The fight of the Pendleton Tribune upon Judge Lowell, candidate for the office of United States senator, a life long, clean, upright, able republican, reminds the people of the present con dition of Oregon In congress. Papers of the Tribune's stripe, nar row partisan concerns which are used as tools of personal cliques, ars who! ly responsible for the present disgrace which Is overshadowing the) state In congress. Clean men have not been wanted by them. Judge Lowell Is being knifed by the Tribune and Its little handful of sup porters because they cannot ' handle him. He has a mind and a will of his own. He cannot be bought, forced, corrupted nor bulldozed and so his own home paper, the alleged organ of the republican party In his home county. Is harpooning him from be hind cover. Look at the status of Oregon In congress today. In the list of resi dences of the members of the house of representatives, the place of resi dence of Ringer Hermann is left blank. He has been In Washington long enough to draw his salary and mileage from the people, but he has never appeared on the floor of the house in the interest of the state. Hermann's status was known to the people of Oregon long before he was elected this last term, but "voting her straight" and the partisan lash and coin sent him to the capital as a rep resentative of the people. Papers of the Tribune's stripe, which secretly fight honesty and cleanliness wherever they have an opportunity, are responsible for this condition. The people of Oregon should unan imously elect Judge Lowell to the United States senate simply because the Tribune and a little handful of politicians are fighting him in his home county, if for no other reason and there Is every reason of the high est kind, why he should be elected aside from this. Let the people remember Oregon's present disgrace and elect a clean, upright man to the senate who will In part, at least, redeem the reputation of the state. LET US MAKE HAY TODAY. The statement that Umatilla coun ty offers inducements to 6000 home seekers may seem absurd at first glance. We know that the wheat land of the county Is being concentrated In fewer hands every year. But here Is where the Inducement to the homeseeker comes In. There are about 60.000 acres of arid land be ing brought under cultivation In dif ferent parts of the county, Jind upon this land Umatilla county must de pend for her Increase in population. Now the time to place this propo sition before the homeseekers In the east. It will require a year for them to sell out and get ready to come west. If they should get a Umatilla county booklet tomorrow, describing the resources of the county, and of fering them every inducement to come, It would be a year before any large number of people would come. Now is the time to advertise the ir rigation projects under way. Py the time the eastern homeseekers are ready to come west, the East Umatilla government project and the various private Irrigation enterprises will be ready for settlers. Let us advertise today, this spring, if we hope to get settlers next year. It takes time for advertising to ripen and bear fruits. Results do not come on the Instant, but It Is certain that results will come if the right kind of literature Is sent east where it will reach the home seeker. The Umatilla County Development league should act upon the proposi tion to advertise the county In the east. There Is room for thousands of people on the arid lands of this coun ty. The day of the small farm Is at hand and money expended In judicious advertising will surely bear fruits. This spring the homeseekers are passing our doors on their way to eastern Washington, because Wash ington advertised last year. Next year the homeseekers should stop off In Umatilla county because Umatilla advertised this year. We must sow the seed In advance. SOCIETY WOMAN A STOWAWAY. Mrs. Samuel Newhouse, well known in London, Paris and New York so ciety, Is on the Atlantic, occupying a magnificent suite on the Kaiser Wll helm tier Grosse, with her two maids and secretary, and without tickets for transportation. When she kissed her husband good bye Tuesday afternoon, on the North German Lloyd pier, she forgot that he had the tickets In his pocket, and she did not remember It until he had left the pier. Field proposed to stretch a telegraph cable across the Atlantic on the ocean bed, there were skeptics who raid that the density of the water at the, bottom of the sea was too great to make tho operation possible.
