AHHUHHlnatctl in Ford's Tlicater, Wash- Ington, by John Wilkes Booth, As he Was Hitting In a liox With Ills Wife Died the Next Morning In a Private House Nearby Lincoln Wax .Always Confident That He Would Not Meet a Violent Death. Washington, D. C, April 14. It will be 41 years tonight that Abraham Lin coln, president of the United States, was Bhot and fatally wounded by John Wilkes Booth, while witnessing a performance of "Our American Cousin," In Rord's. theater, In this city. Strange to say, no exercises are held anywhere, so far as known, to mark the memorable day. It was on Good Friday, the 14th of April. 1866, that the country, rejoic ing over the conclusion of the civil war, which had cost so many precious Uvea and enormous sacrifices of money, was plunged Into darkest gloom by the hands of a fanatical as sassln. On the morning of that event ful day President Lincoln had the first opportunity In many months to have a long talk with his eldest son, Captain Robert Lincoln, who had been serving on the staff of General Grant Father and son breakfasted together at the White House and then had a long talk concerning the profession which the young staff officer was to adopt. It was due to President Lin coln's advice that Captain Lincoln gave up his military career and con tinued his study of law. Later In the forenoon Lincoln attended the last meeting of the cabinet. All the members were present, excepting Mr. Seward, the secretary of state, who had broken his Jaw In falling from his horse a short time before. Not a single one of the members of Presi dent Lincoln's cabinet Is now Hying. General Grant was present by Invita tion and occupied the vacant seat of Secretary Seward. The situation after the close of the war was' discussed and President Lincoln spoke with kindness of Gen eral Lee and expressed himself strong ly against harsh measures In the south. The terms of Lee's surrender were fully approved. During the af ternoon the president received many visitors and toward evening he was tired out. He did not wish to go to the theater, but did not want to dls appoint the people who were sure to crowd the house, as It had been an nounced that President Lincoln and General Grant would attend the per formance. Just before starting for the theater President Lincoln paid his customary visit to Secretary Stanton, at. the war department. It Just happened that the president, while returning to the White House, accompanied by Secre tary Stanton, referred to the secre tary's often expressed fear that some assassin would seek the life of the president. Mr. Lincoln said he was confident that his guards would allow- no assassin to get at him and. even If some fanatic should succeed, he would not be able to escape with his life. A few hours later President Lin coln, with Mrs. Lincoln, his two sons and Major Rathbnne occupied a box In Ford's theater, on the right side of the stage and about 14 feet above the level of the stage. It was at the close of the first act that Booth fired the fatal shot and leaped from the box upon the stage. Injuring his leg by falling, having caught his foot In one of the flags on the side of the stnge. Before Booth escaped, he stabbed Wllllnm S. Withers of Wakefield, who blocked his way. Withers was nr rested, but proved his Innocence nnd positively Identified Booth as the as sassin. Wounded ' to death President Lin coln was carried from the theater amid a pcene of Indescribable excite ment. He whs taken to a house across the street, occupied by a tnllor named Peterson, nnd there he died early Snt urday.mornlng. surrounded by the members of his fnmlly and the offi cers of the .cabinet. The last one of those who were present at Lincoln's death, Secretnry John Hny, died Inst year. He was at that time one of President Lincoln's secretaries. On the nluht of President Lincoln's death Mr. Hay bcenme tho possessor of the ring worn by the dead president. He had It made over with a crystal set ting, containing a lock of President Lincoln's hair. It was this ring which President Roosevelt wore at his In auguration, at the suggestion of Mr. Hay. NIGHT ! EflKHARDT'S IDEALS INVESTIGATE GRAFT CHARGES. Id This Instance It Is Said They Were Not Justified. . ' Washington, April 14. There Is In progress now an Investigation of the amount of work which Is being or has been done for army officers at various shops or plants under gov ernmental control. The Investigation has been precip itated by assertions made by offic ers that others were being favored by those In authority. It has been found that work for officers personally has been done at some of the shops, such as the repair and manufacture of fur niture, but It is not believed that the work Is carried on to any great ex tent. In one of the photographic branches of the war department some copying of pictures has been done oc casionally, but In most Instances the cost of labor and material has been borne by (ho officer most directly In terested. In other cases the sum In volved was so small as to amount to nothing, and the work was not done at a time when anything of an official nature was pending. The Inquiry has been searching In some of the govern ment shops, and at no place so far has It been disclosed that there has been any abuse of privilege or rank favoritism. At Manila, where the officers were distant from usual sources of supply and repair. It has often been necessary to have personal work done at the army plants, but It Is believed the report from that quarter will show there Is no extensive graft, as has been Intimated In some quarters. BLIND COCPLE WEDS. Unusual Ceremony Performed In Boise City Yesterday. One of the most touching sights ever seen In the city was the wedding last evening, at the home of the bride's father, of Miss Pearl Hawea, daughter of Benjamin F. Hawes, and Russell McKinley, son of Rev. and Mrs. R. A. McKinley, says the Boise Statesman. The bride, who Is an unusually bright girl, has been blind since her Infancy. She graduated from the Col orado school for the blind and then took the regular normal course at Lewlston, graduating with high hon ors. . Since then she has kept house for her father In a most charming way, being exceedingly capable. Mr. McKinley lost his eyesight as the result of a premature explosion during the Cuban war. He attended the Columbus school for the blind, and while he has been deprived of his sight for but a few years, he has proved himself unusually apt In every way. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Mc Kinley seems an unusually appropri ate one In every way. Both are very musical, the bride being a pianist of high ability and he bridegroom play ing a number of different musical In struments. In his message to. the special ses sion of the Illinois legislature. Just convened, Governor Deneen called at tention to the recent decision of the supreme court which declared uncon stitutional the law passed by the last legislature, and said great confusion would ensue unless a new primary election law were speedily enacted.
