Officers Bostwlck and Bragg, hav
ing heard that a poker game was be
ing run In the room over the Stand
ard cafe, visited the place about It
o'clock, when the arrests as above
stated were made. The occupants of
the room were out of sight when the
officers entered, but they were found
In hiding. They declared they were
only playing a harmless game of solo,
but appearances were niuchj against
the solo theory, though no money was

New Bridge lit Wallace.
Under the supervision of Street
Commissioner Burton, the old Cedar
street bridge near the Oregon Rail
road St Navigation compuny's station,
huB been torn out. The work was
completed today, and the work of re
placing the razed structure with a
modern and more expensive bridge, 80
feet wide, the width of Cedar street,
will be begun at once. The old bridge
was condemned some time ago.
The work of driving the plies In the
river, to divide the current so It may
be confined. In the hope of solving the
serious tailing problem, Is progres
sing rapidly under the direction of the
contractor, Marlon Topliff.
The plledrlvcr now has passed Ce
dar street, working up stream. It Is
thought that by diverting all the
water of the river lifto a narrow
channel sufficient force will be devel
oped to wash the tailings from the
concentrators down stream and out of

Terrific Wind Storm.
A terrific wind storm almost In the
form of a hurricane, has been raging
since last Friday night and an Im
mense amount of timber went' down
before It, the road In flvery direction
being Impassable for a time. The
wind was extremely cold. Monday
and Tuesday It was reported 10 below
zero and has remained at about the
same up to this date. Deputy Road
Supervisor Duncan bearded the wind
and cold beginning Sunday afternoon
opening up the stage road and by
Wednesday all roads In this part were
open to travel. It was quite a danger
oub undertaking to go Into the tim
ber when trees were falling In every
direction and several hairbreadth es
capes were the result; but duty de

Died by 1'nknown Injuries.
Peter, the 6-year-old son of Samuel
Connaughton, living near Sweet, died
this morning as the result of an acci
dent the evening before. The father,
with a man named Chase, was engag
ed in tearing down a small stable, and
the lad was playing about. The build
ing collapsed and the boy was injur
ed In some manner, which the doc
tor could not determine. Chase had a
leg broken, and the doctor was called
to attend him, there being no thought
that the lad was seriously Injured.

A veritable bonanza was unearthed
Monday when the old sidewalk on
Yakima avenue was taken up. Coins
of all denominations were dug up from
$10 gold pieces to pennies. The slde
walk had done service for almost 13
years and the collection of coins was

seekers" was engaged all afternoon In
digging around In the dirt In the
