Little things
annoy you - and
make you irritable; you can't sleep,
you are unable to quietly and calmly
perform your daily tasks or care for
your children.
The relation of the nerves and gen
erative organs in woman is so close
that nine-tenths of the nervous pros
tration, nervous debility, the blues,
sleeplessness and nervous irritability
rise from some derangement of the
organism which makes her, a woman.
Fits of depression or restlessness and
irritability ; spirits easily affected, so
that one minute she laughs, the next
minute weeps ; pain in the abdominal
region and between the shoulders;
loss of voice ; nervous dyspepsia ; a
tendency to cry at the least provoca
tionall these point to nervous pros
tration. jl Nothing will relieve this distressing
condition and prevent months of pros
tration and suffering so surely as Lydia
E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound.
Mrs. M. E. Shotwell.of 103 Flatbush
Avenue, Brooklyn, N. Y writes:
"I cannot express the wonderful relief I
have experienced by taking Lydia E. Pink
ham's Vegetable Com pound! I suffered for
a long time with nervous prostration, back
ache, headache, loss of appetite. I cculd
not sleep and would walk the floor almost
every night.
"I had three doctors and got nabetter, and
life was a burden. I was advised to try
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound,
and it has worked wonders for me.
"I am a well woman, my nervousness is all
gone and my friends say I look ten years
younger."
Will not the volumes of letters from
women made Btrong by Lydia E. Pink

all women of its virtues ? Surely you
cannot wish to remain sick, weak
and discouraged, exhausted each day,
when yon can be as easily cured as
other women.
CARD FROM TALLMAN A CO.
Their Liberal Offer to Treat Worst
Case of Catarrh In Pendleton.
To the Editor:
We have such an unusual offer to
make to your readers, one that will be
of the greatest value to them, that we
hope you will give this letter promi
nent location.
For some time we have had an op
portunity to watch the results follow
ing the use of Hyomel, a treatment
for catarrh that cures by breathing
medicated air, absolutely without
any stomach dosing. The results
have been so remarkable that we feel
Justified In making a public offer to
treat the worst case of catarrh In Pen
dleton with the understanding that if
Hyomel does not cure. It will cost ab
solutely nothing.
People who have spent a great deal
of money with catarrh specialists,
deriving but little benefit, have seen
almost immediate good results from
the use of Hyomel, and continued
treatment with this remedy has re
sulted In a complete and lasting cure.
The complete Hyomel outfit costs
on!y $i, and consists of an Inhaler
that can be carried In the vest pocket,
a medicine dropper and a bottle of
Hyomel. ' Should this not be enough
for a cure, extra bottles of Hyomel
can be obtained for 50 cents. Com
pare this small expense with the fees
charged by specialists, and remember
we guarantee the treatment will cost
nothing unless It cures.
We hope this offer will be accepted
by many of your readers.
Very truly yours,
TALLMAN & CO.

caused me more misery than I can
tell. It seemed all In vain to get even
temporary benefit from the remedies

NAVY YARD NEEDS FUEL.
Operations at Brooklyn May Re Badly
Hampered.
Washington. March 23. The navy
department Is In receipt of an esti
mate from the commandant of the
navy yard at Brooklyn for 37,000 tons
of coal likely to be required during the
next fiscal year. This estimate is the
first to be received for fuel for the new
central power plant, a condition which
requires that the coal shall be pur
chased out of the fund for the mainte
nance of navy yards and Btatlons.
The estimate has caused something
like consterna'ion In the navy depart
ment, for the res sen that It will be
necessary to amend tho estimates for
coal to say nothing of numerous other
Items Intended for the navy yards and
Btatlons next year, after July 1. In
the case of the coal for the New York
yard the cost cannot be much less than
1111,000 and, possibly, the sum will
be considerably more than that.
In view of the refusal of congress
to appropriate for the urgent deflc
lencles. Including coal for the navy
yirds, It Is believed It will bo nec
essiry to send In to the house naval
committee a new set of estimates, as
It Is already apparent that the Item of
1830,000, recommended by the navy
department as sufficient to maintain
the navy yard at Brooklyn and other
places, will be altogether Inadequate,
and that fully $150,000 should be add
ed to the total, and perhaps the extra
amount will be twice that much. The
situation would be considerably ag
gravated, should a strike of the coal
miners be declared and the price of
coal raised to a much higher figure,

Brooklyn, N. Y.. March 23. The
estimate of the cost of the work on
the buttleshlp Massachusetts In the
Brooklyn navy yard reaches nearly
the sum of $1,000,000 and It is expect
ed that nearly two years will be re
quired to Instal the Improvements and
make the alterations recommended by
the board of survey, which has exam
Ined the vessel carefully at the yard
and reported In full the needs of the
ship In the plan of modernizing the
equipment, battery, boilers, engines,
etc.
Much Interest has attached to this
project of the Massachusetts, espe
cially as It has been sent to "Brooklyn
at a time when the work of the yard
Is well night exhausted and there is
no means of retaining the force of
expert workmen who have for some
years been engaged In the construc
tion of the Connecticut. The work on
the Massachusetts will be similar to
that authorized on board of the In
diana, and something In the time and
labor will be saved, of course, by util
izing the plans and patterns covering
the work on the latter ship. Sccre-

That the usual number of tough
characters, thugs, tinhorns and hoboes
is following the construction of the
north bank road Is shown by the com
plaint of The Dalles Chronicle.
While The Dalles is filled with al
leged "worklngmen" none of them
will accept work at good wages and so
the city authorities are determined to
drive them out.
The Chronicle says of the situation
In The Dalles:
For some time past there has been
complaint from certain quarters that
our police officers were entirely too
vigilant and unnecessarily harsh In
their dealings with laborers from the
north bank road who come over and
get on a "high lonesome" and spend
their good money In the town.
In the first place there Is no reason
why the north bank laborer should
be treated with any more or less con
sideration than any other laborer.
The town Is as free to him as to any
citizen. He has the same privileges,
rights and liberties as a citizen of The
Dalles. He must conform to the same
regulations regarding behavior.
There is no law against him accu
mulating any variety of a Jag that
may please his fancy so long as he
remains peaceable and Is able to tote
It around without Interfering with the
established order of things or impos
ing on the peace and dignity of the
city of The Dalles and the great state
of Oregon.
Very few people appreciate what
the police force of our city has to con
tend wish. There has been a gang of
bums and plug uglles In town for some
time, which received marching orders
yesterday and which Illustrates the sit
uation. A north bank contractor came over
yesterday on the lookout for men.
He wanted 20 at $2.25vper day and
good board. Marshal Wood, to help
the man, rounded up a bunch of men
who had been seen "looking for work"
for some time. Of the bunch of
rounderes not one wanted work. It was
there and then that the marshal gave
them to understand that the city
would endeavor to get along without
their abiding presence.

causes that produce it work silently in the system for years. This insidious
disease becomes intrenched in the blood, and some exposure to cold or damp
weather, or si ight indiscretion brings on an attack.- Poor digestion, stomach

the system are responsible for Rheumatism. Food souring in the stomach
poisons the blood, the failure of the Kidneys and Liver to act properly leaves
waste matter and impurities in the system, which, coming in contact with
the natural acids of the body, form uric acid. This is absorbed by the blood,
and as it penetrates to the muscles, nerves and bones produces the terrible
pains and nclies and other disagreenble symptoms of Rheumatism. Life is

New York. March 23. As shown by
the annual report of the United States
Steel corporation. Just published, the
earnings of the corporation were
heavier In 1905 than In any year In
the history of the company. The gross
earnings amounted to the enormous
total of $585,331,736, an Increase of
$114,092,306 over the preceding year,
while net earnings showed a gain of
$46,61 1,136. The balance available
for dividends was $38,317,963 larger
than In 1901, and was equivalent to
seven per cent oh the preferred and
8 1-2 per cent on the common stock.
From this surplus, however, was de

Improvements, which would leave!

The president of the company In
his report to the shareholders says
that the manufacturing departments
of the subsidiary companies were op

Interruption. The production of pig
Iron and finished products was
heavier than In any preceding year.
Liberal outlays were made for addi
tional property acquired, new con
struction, improvements and unusual
replacement, the expenditures on this
account amounting to nearly $38,000,
000. The rate of wages In 1905 was
practically the same as In 1901, al the
prices realized for the products were
materially less In 1905 than In 1901.
One would think the Laxative idea
in a cough syrup should have been
advanced long before It was. It seems
the only rational remedy for Coughs
