cauxes, first the sudden change In
weather, and second, to the fact that
when the good weather came on a
few weeks ago many feeders believ
ing that spring was here, sold their

week. The Information relative to
the deal became public yesterday
when A. V. MeCarty, the stock buyer
of Kamlah, completed the purchase
of 500 head of steers which he se
cured under a contract for the Em
pire Cattle company of Helena, Mont
Included In Mr. McCarty's purchase
are 200 head secured from Ralston
Vollmer and Ben Reeves of this city,
The Montana company has also se
cured through other contracts agree
ments from W. M. Clemens of Ana-
tone, Bert Buchet of Pomeroy, John
Lamb of Kamlah, and Ell Hickman
and Sol Caldwell of Lapwal, about 2.

The belated news was received here
today that George Brouchou was
found dead on the trail south of Mab
ton this week by a searching party.
Brouchou left Mabton Saturday at
3 p. m. with a friend, with whom he
Intended to ride a part of the way to
ills home. Brouchou left the man at
a point on the trail In order to take
a short cut to his ranch and th:it was
the last seen of him until his body
was found by one of the parties sent
in search of him.
His body was found In a position
that would Indicate that the man had
become lost and had decided to spend
the night where he was. His shoes
were under his head nnd the- body
was In a position of repose. There
were no marks of any kind on his
body and the coroner decided that the

Almost since the blizzard of Sun-
day it has been extremely cold In
Tipton and the Intervening country as
far as the John Day valley. Superin
tendent Barton of the Sumpter Val
ley, says the temperature has been
reported at 36 degrees below for sev
eral days. Mr. Barton made a hur
ried trip to Canyon City, returning
last night and says that on the road
he saw hundreds of birds drop dead
from cold. Around Tipton the birds
are dying off rapidly. One man
picked up 60 In one day. Baker City

llolcomb'H Hody Pound.
The body of William Holcomb, who
was- lost November 28 of last year,
while on his way to the Big Fiddler
was found yesterduy morning by a
couple of miners who were on their
way to Boise from the south, fork of
the Boise river, where they had been
mining. The body was on the slope
on the south side of the Boise river.
about 14 miles from Neal and about
15 miles from where Holcomb was
last seen at Dan Sham mock's camp
near the Balbach mill. Boise States

W. R. Kevin of Boise. Idaho, was
In North Powder the first of the week
looking after his Interests here. Mr.
Kevltt recently purchased H. O. Gor
ham's sawmill and will enlarge the
mill to about 30,000 capacity per day.
Mr. Kevltt has already ordered about
J4000 worth of new machinery, which
will be here In about 10 days. In this
shipment Includes machinery for a
luth mill and sticker. Mr. Kevltt has
made arrangements to have logs
shipped from Telocaset to this place.
North Powder News.
Dwelling Burned at I-oMtliie.
Dick Pullen had the misfortune to
have his house burned yesterday. Mr.
Pullen was cutting wood quite a dis
tance from the house, and had It not
been for the timely assistance of J. B.
Pace and J. P. Alumbaugh, all the
household goods would have been de
stroyed, as it was the household goods

the Elks lodge last night to Incorpor
ate tho lodge. The plan is to Incor
porate and capitalize the Incorpora
tion at $50,000 for the purpose of

the plans as outlined and to look up
