To live content with small
means: to seek elegance rather
than luxury, and refinement
rather than fashion: to be
worthy, not respectable; and
wealthy, not rich: to study hard,
think quiet'.y. talk gently, act
frankly; to listen to stars and
birds, babes and sagos, with
open heart, to bear all cheerful
ly, do all bravely, await occa
sions, hurry never: in a word,
to let the spiritual, unbidden
and unconscious, iirmv up
through the commonplace.
William Henry Channing.
MTAl.L'S LAST APOLOGY.
John MeCnll ha passed beyond hu
man censure. i:ut a remark which
he made on his death bed is worth
mentioning. H-.- pave us a glimpse of
the mask he had to wear. "If you
only knew what kind of work I had
to J..."
There is a pathetic eloquence in
lhee words. They r--veal the douiile
life forced constantly upon public
men. IP-presenting a public trust
and tannic up with interests often
times incompatible. they have to
fight out' their Hamlet problems be
fore the tribunal of conscience. They
would Jo one thing: they have to do
another.
This Is the case of the politician
who is pledged to a party rule. It Is
the case of the clergyman connected
with a stupid congregation. It Is the states
case of the editor writing for a bossjmary.
controlled community. It is the easel That
of every public man whose ideals are pinuits
buried under the rubM-h of prejudice,
or corruption.
.MoCa'.f; apology will hardly appeal
to the people whom he has wronged,
but it should make us charitable. The
double life is not pleasant. It means
a constant hide and s-ek same with
.our best convictions. It means moral
cowardice. Wor-t of nil, it m-ans a
loss of those higher sensibilities
which furnish the basis of true manhood.

toiod Influences from the whites
will hurry along the elevation of the
Indian more rapidly than any other
means. Good example from the
whiles will be an equally powerful
force for the betterment of the In

easily moulded Into mental channels,
one vicious white friend will deprave
an Indian more rapidly than If the
Indian was left to his ow n Inclination.
One good white friend can uplift and
Improve the Indian with an astonish
ing degree of success.
The I'matillas are going to be fix

and It Is safe to say that the tribe
will never be entirely removed from
this vicinity no matter what vicissi

rendleton and her citizenship will
be held responsible for the condition
of the Indian in this vicinity. The
world will judge of the moral stand
ards of this community by the exam
ple and teaching which it places be
fore the Indian. If the tribe deterior
ates moially and mentally, and he
conies degenerate and depraved, the
world will say the whites of Umatil

And if the Indian climbs upward,
becomes self-supporting, self-respecting,
morally and mentally strong, the
world will praise the splendid stand

DISAPPEARING HOTEL TOWELS.
"We lose money enough In stolen
towels every week to board half a
dozen porters." suld n hotel clerk.
"We never know exactly where they
go, but they certainly disappear, and
that right fast. If some of the people
who take our towels would exert their
energies in a more laudable vocation,
they would have been rich many
moons ago.
"There Is scarcely a room In the
hotel that does not lose a towel at
least three times a week. Of course,
we place several kinds, face towels,
bath towels and just plain towels, In
each room, and some one finds them
so attractive that they are dropped
Into a grip and hustled out with the
remainder of the luggage.
"When you figure that a good bath
towel costs from 10 to 20 cents, and
other towels anywhere from 3 to 5
cents, you probably can estimate the
dead loss to a hotel. It Is very con
venient to drop them Into satchels,
suit cases or trunks, and they are
right handy to wrap shoes or other
dirty articles of clothing In."
Louisville Courier-Journal.
KEPT II Ml SELF COOL.
A man and his wife were once stay
ing at a hotel when In the night they
wore aroused from their slumbers by
the cry that the hotel was afire.
"Now, my dear," said the husband,
"I will put Into practice what I have
preached. Put on all your Indispensa
ble apparel, and keep cool."
Then he slipped his watch Into his
vest pocket and walked with his wife
out of the hotel.
When all danger was past he said:
"Now you see how nccessitry It is to
keen cool."
