ture of 1905. the funds of Portland
may be deposited in but three bunks
in Fortland. namely, the First N'a

is asserted that the measure was

About $110,000 will be putd to sheep
shearers by Umatilla county sheep
men this season, if tho ordinary
prices of 7 cents for hand and 8 cents
for machine shearing prevail as in
former years.
Already about D000 bucks have
been sheared In the county, this be
ing the forerunner of the regular
shearing season which will not begin
until early In April.
It is estimated that there are about
225.000 head of sheep In the county
tills spring to be sheared, nnd about
half of this number will be sheared by
hand shearers at uu average price of
7 cents per head, making a total of
J7N75 for the hand shearing.
The remaining one-half of the total
number 111 the county, amounting to
112.500 head, will be sheared by ma
chines at S. cents per head, making a
total of $9000 for the machine shear
ers. Of this total number perhaps
10.(100 head are bucks for which an
average of 20 cents will be paid for
shearing.
Aside from the herds owned and
ranged in Umatilla county, a number
of outside herds are driven Into the
county to be sheared on account
convenience to railroad facilities.
During the shearing season lit least
10 "J shearers will be employed In the
county and Pendleton is the head
quarters and organization center for
most bT the shearing crews of the In
land empire. The earliest shearing in
eastern Oregon will be done In Mor
row county and a large number of

Parrlsi, it, Johnson of Walla Walla
(Joes to Reward.
Captain Parrlsh B. Johnson, the
veteran Journalist and public official
of Walla Walla, died at his home In
that city yesterday,' after an extended
Illness. Concerning his varied and In
teresting public career the Walla Wal
la Statesman says:
Captain Johnson was born at Wad
dlnuton, K. ' T November; 28, 11837.
He was educated In the public schools
at Syracuse, X. Y and afterward
studied law. When 19 years old he
went to Dubuiiue, Iowa, where he was
employed as local editor on a news
paper. '
In 18&S he moved to St. Louis and
became local editor of a dally news
paper. While In St. Louis he was ad
mitted to the bar. The same year he
migrated to the Pacific coust, where
he was associated as law partner with
the filmed California attorney, Ed
mond Randolph, and In the spring of
1861, with Frank Plxley upon the
stuff of the San Frnnctsco Times.
From San Francisco he went to
Silver City, N'ev., and became editor
of the Washoe Times. He then went
to Carson City, Nov., and iengnged In
editorial work pn the Dully Silver
Age. In 1861 he returned to Sail
Francisco and enlisted In 'Co. F, Sec
ond California Infantry, shortly after
being commissioned second lieutenant.
In,ls62,he was promoted to captain
mid was made ouiirteiimistcr In De
cember, 186:1. He was ordered to
Arizona for duty.
He was then sent to Fort Wnlln
Walla, where Ahe served as quarter
master from July 1, 1S6I, to October,
1S65. At the close of the civil war he
was mustered out of the service In
California.
In 1SC6 he returned to Wallti Walla
and commenced the practice of his
profession as an attorney, and became
a candidate for the legislature upon
the republican ticket, which was de
feated. In the spring of 1S67 he was
appointed clerk of the district court.

of the legislature, and speaker of the
