All Drinking Water Should lk- Roiled Danger of Typhoid GvriiM U Vory Great III Greon Vegetable Ifmtcmillk I a Safe Drink During Typhoid Epidemic Eugene Is Having n Hurt! Eight Act Inst the Disease. With typhoid raging In Eugene, examination of water In the bacterio logical department at the Agricultu ral college is frequent now. Prof. Pernot Is kept almost con stantly busy with experiments bearing on water and germs. Water from Eugene has been examined with the result announced below. After what he has found In water tested. Prof. Pirnot Is dreadfully in earnest In urg ing everybody for the present to use only boiled water and to scald milk and other utensils. Not only should city water be boiled, but so should well water, as Is shown by the statement below, made by request of the Times, by Prof. Pernot. He said: "Boiled water Is In use In many households, and there are those who do not like It. Buttermilk may be substituted, for typhoid fever germs cannot exist In the presence of lactic acid. Nor can they live In butter or cheese, for both contain lactic acid. Lemonade Is also available for drink ing purposes. Lemon or lime Juice has been demonstrated to be fatal to typhoid bacilli. A solution of one part lemon Juice to 50 parts water is an entirely safe as well as a whole some beverage. "In the foods, all those cooked can be eaten without fear. A boiling temperature, 212 degrees, Is fatal to bacilli. The danger Is In raw foods like apples, lettuce, celery and kin dred species. Lettuce served with vinegar is Immune because of the acetic acid In the salad dressing. "Cooking utensils, more especially milk utensils, should be thoroughly scalded with boiling water or steam, and should not be allowed to come In contact subsequently with unboiled water. This Is especially Important. is milk Is one of the best possible mediums for growth of the typhoid germs. It Is better as a matter of fact to heat all milk nearly to the boiling point before use. "Some think that wells cannot be contaminated. The water from on. where a typhoid fever case developed was analyzed at the college ano 3000 germs to the cubic centimeter were found. Three thousand germs to the cubic centimeter would mean 18.000 germs in every teaspoonful of water. It was a 4 0-foot well, and driven, which might have been supposed would be beyond the reach of germs. Water from a similar well several hundred yards distant and of the same depth was examined and found to present the same conditions. The fever case undoubtedly came from the well water referred to. "Recently water from a well In the vicinity of Lebnnon was examined and found to contain 2S.000 germs to the cubic centimeter. It is needless to say that the members of the family had been suffering for a long time with sickness, and that the water from the well was the source of all the trouble. The recent examination of Eugene water by Prof. Pernot showed a bac. teriai content ot 3640 germs per cubic centimeter. COMMITTEE REPORTS. Ways and Means Commute of Sun day School Association Ilecoin- nientls. The ways and means committee of the Umatilla County Sunday School association reported as follows at the recent Athena convcptlon: Whereas, we recognize In the Sun day school one of the most Important departments of Christian work, there fore we recommend: First That more and more our of ficers and teachers seek to make It a vital center of evangelistic activity, and that after the young have been won to Christ that wise and helpful Tlllrture be given to them that they may grow up Into Christian hien and wdTei). Second That us a heip t this enl we urge upon our county officers the nr.iaing or uistrlct conventions as planned by our organization that every possible help be given to all the hundny schools of the county. Third That we believe the adop tion 01 tne -nome department" and the "cradle roll" will greatly extend the usefulness of our Sunday school In all parts of the county, and we urge mis upon all. Fourth That In a wisely planned Use of decision day there Is an op portunity to focus the thought and prayers of officers, teachers and the church upon the conversion of our young people; but we earnestly urge mac decision uay shall always be recognized as a means to an end, and that those who on that day accent Jesus as their savior shall receive the especial care of all the church that the new life then begun may grow as the child Jesus grew, "waxing stronir In spirit, filled with wisdom, and the graca of God was upon Him." Fifth That we recommend to every Sunday school' the organization of teacher training classes, made up of the young men and young women or our schools, and that these be placed under the care of our most consecrated and best teachers, that we may prepare a body of qualified teachers. Sixth Believing as we do that Or egon Is on the eve of a period of great growth and development, we com mend the wisdom of the State Sunday School association In planning nt this time an advance movement In the Sunday school work of the state, and that we express the hope that they may soon see their way to employ a state field worker, and that we pledge Umatilla county to her share of such expense. Seventh That we recommend that each of our Sunday schools be asked to assist the county association In this work by sending to our treasurer the sum of two cents for every enrolled member of the Sunday school. I had tried so many medicines and doc tors without help that I was thor oughly discouraged. As a last resort I tried the cod liver oil preparation, Vlnol. and to my surprise, It had none t the fishy, greasy or disagreeable taste of old-fashioned cod liver oil or emulsions, and it was delicious to take. In a remarkably short time it gave me a hearty appetite, built up my nervous system, and restored me to perfect health and strength." "Vlnol cures such conditions as these because It contains every one of the medicinal, curative and body building elements of cod liver oil and without one drop of the system-clogging oil to upset the stomach and re tard Us work. It Imparts In a natural manner strength and vigor to every organ of the body, al.la digestion and makes ileh, red blood.
