Tht there Is something doing among the Portland men who are as piring to the United States senator- ship, nnd that a bitter fight Is to be made against H. M. Cake is shown by the following letter. which has Just be?n received by the Pendleton Com mercial association: Portland, Or., Feb. 24, 1906. Mr. A. W. Nye, Secretary. Pendleton, Ore. Dear Sir: As a citlien of Oregon and also as a republican in politics, I desire to protest against the use of the machinery of the Oregon Develop ment league for political purposes. As you know, the Oregon Development league practically came Into existence In this city two years ago for the pur pose of taking advantage of publicity accruing to the state through the Lewis and Clark fair. The citizens of Oregon have been loyal in the support of this grand enterprise, in which you have had the distinguished honor of being a factor. I enclose herewith an article published In the Oregonlan In this city, in which Mr. Tom Rich ardson, the secretary and treasurer of the Oregon Development league, states that the large sum nf 125.000 a year Is a mere bagatelle of the total sum received ajid expended for the purpose of exploiting the state of Ore gon. The work that the Oregon Develop ment league has already done is worthy of the highest commendation and unquestionably has been product ive of beneficial results to this state. That work, however, may be said to be in its infancy. Knowing that you are loyally Interested In this work and hat you realize that your field of en deavor In the future will be far wider and be productive of even more ad vantageous results to this grand state, I feel that I am doing you a service when I call your attention to the men ace that now threatens the future work of the Oregon Development eague. This menace is the candida cy of H. M. Cake for the United States senate while he holds the office of president of tho Commercial club here, and while he remains as con spicuously Identified with the work of the Oregon Development league as he has caused himself to appear In many ntervlews In the newspapers through out the state. I have been Informed that Mr. Tom Richardson, the secre tary and treasurer of the Oregon De velopment league, is working as a campaigner In the Interest of Mr. Cake. Mr, H. M. Cake has the same right as every other elector In the state of Oregon to be a candidate for the of fice of United States senator; but neither Mr. Cuke nor any other man has the right to use the Oregon De velopment league as a boost for his candidacy. I desire to see the De velopment league continue In this good work and I feel that unless dis claimer Is made of any connection with Mr. Cake and his candidacy and that Mr. Richardson be requested to desist from participation In the polit ical campaign, the results to the league will be disastrous. The generous contributions of the Oregon Development league have come from democrats, prohibitionists, socialists and Independent voters as well as from republicans. Under the guise of working In the Interests of the Oregon Development league Mr. Cake and Mr.' Richardson have tour ed the state, and I submit that It is unfair to the Oregon Development League that Mr. Cake should take advantage of these circumstances and this condition to further his own po litical ends. I feel that all that Is needed Is to cnll your attention to this condition, and thu rebuke that Mr, Cake will receive for his attempt to use the Oregon Development league as a partisan political muchine will be as sharp, sudden and decisive as it deserves. Mr. Cake Is not the only republican in the Oregon Develop ment league. There are others who are entitled to the honors of office, but none has had the temerity to at tempt to exploit himself at the ex pense of such a non-partisan, non political and altogether excellent or gunizatlon as the Oregon Develop ment league. It seems to me that your organ Iza tlon should pass a resolution declar Ing that It docs not In any way, as a organization, countenance the candl dacy of H. M. Cake for the United States senate, nnd that If Mr. Rich ardson, the secretary and treasurer of the Oregon Development league, de sires to campulgn In the Interests of Mr. Cake, he must first sever his con nectlon with the Oregon Developmen league. You all know the disastrous results to Oregon from meddling in partlsa political fights and I appeal to you as a citizen of the state and In the Interests of the state to take prompt action to prevent any sucn interior ence In political matters on the part of any man or set of men connected with the Oregon Development league Sincerely yours, RICHARD M. M'CANN. Chamber of Commerce, Portland, Ore. RRICK FOR PAVING. Raker City Pkamsersj Different Ma terials Vcd. There are some other methods of street paving to be considered besides asphalt and bltullthlc, says the Baker City Democrat. The attention of the Democrat and the public, now that the subject Is up for discussion, has been called by several large property owners and taxpayers through other methods of paving that may prove to be more efficient and economical than those under discussion. At Coffeyvllle. Kas., which is In the southern part of the state, where they have natural gas for fuel and a fine clay for brick making, there Is a large establishment which turns out 225,000 vitrified brick every day, everyone of which Is being used In street paving in the prairie towns of the Mississippi valley, where conditions are such as to thoroughly test any kind of paving In hot or cold weather, wet or dry seasons. It is learned, also, that this Kansas company Is Increasing Its plant to a capacity of 300.000 a day and Is now far behind with Its orders. Vitrified brick for street paving are also made In other towns of southern Kunsas In the same gas belt. The brick are produced at a cheap cost and can be furnished on reasona ble terms to all consumers. The Democrat's Informant states that where vitrified brick have been used, under varying conditions for street paving. It has been found to be the most enduring substance and the most satisfactory for traffic un der winter and summer conditions. Some people have the Impression that vitrified brick make a noisy pavement, but this Is said to be a mis take, though the brick Is naturally more noisy than an asphalt pavement. Just as the old cobble stones of Lon uon are more noise-making than the vitrified brick. Cobble-stones and brick, however, stand up under heavy traffic with the least amount of repair. ' C 'Special Kulsrr'H Health Rules, The German emperor endeavors to follow the "rules of life" laid down by his favorite physician, as follows: "Eat fruit for breakfast. Eat fruit for lunch. Avoid nnstry and hot enkes. Only take potatoes once a day. Don't drink tea or coffee. Walk four miles every day, wet or fine. Take a bath every day. Wash the face every night Mn warm water. Sleep eight hours every night." The kaiser ascribes his excellent physical condi tion to close adherence to this advice. London Tit-Kits. For Sale.
