An attempt to eliminate the com mission man In livestock sales may be the result of nn unsatisfactory confer ence last week between western stock rnisers and the livestock exchange members of Kansas City and St. Jo seph, says the Kansas City Star. After several hours of discussion a meeting at the stock yards adjourned, leaving the opposed Interests In pre cisely the state they were before the discussion began raisers protesting against present commission rates and members of the exchange asserting that they are receiving less thnn their due. Xo definite action will bo taken until the directors of the Kansas City Livestock Exchange have had an op portunity to meet and discuss their future position with the St. Joseph contingent. When the Advance Was Made, Following a nntlonal gathering of commission men in Buffalo, X'. Y.. last summer a number of livestock exchanges. Including Kansas City, St. Joseph. Sioux City nnd South Omaha, made a general advance lit prices for handling car lots of cattle, sheep and hogs. The reasons given for the advance were that car lots with up-to-date railroad equipment, were much larger than in years past: that the cost of handling stock at the market point.? was greater, and that prices received by the shippers were higher, making It easier for him to pay a larger com mission. The rate for cattle had for merly been f.O cents a head, or a max imum of $10 for a carload lot, In cluding cars of mixed stock; for sheep ami hogs the charge was 6 a car for single cars, and 18 for "double-deckers." The ndvanred rate fixed n minimum charge of J10 a car for cattle, and a maximum of f12 for mixed cars; a minimum of $!i for sheep and hogs, or $10 for double cars. These are the prices that provoked the Indignation of western shippers. In response to pressure brought to bear by groweis. the newly establish ed rates for cattle had been receded from before last week's meeting. On the rates for pbeep and hogs, how ever, the commission men "stood pat,'" declaring that they had lost money In handling these at the old rates, and that the commission business was not in the prosperous condition It should be, considering the amount of stock handled through Missouri river markets. Sny Salesmen Wouldn't Succeed. "If the growers represented by the committee from the American 'Na tional association think thy can Im prove conditions by abolishing sales representatives here, they are wel come to try." said a Kansas City com mission man. "This is an open field, and thev are welcome to start as soon as they are ready. The experiment was tiled several years ago and prov ed a failure." "It there appeared to be any real reason for an advance in commission rates we would not object," said the growers. "Put. so far as we can see, the Increased charges are made only to swell the profits for an over pro duction of commission men. We es timate that there are fully twice as many members of the Kansas City Livestock Exchange as are required to handle the stock In this market In any other business, competition would have the effect of depressing rates, but in this Instance the Idea seems to have been to get enough money out of the grower and buyer to make a living for the entire crowd." Washington. Feb. 26. Fabulous fortunes In Holland is the glittering halt used by sharpers to rob a large number of unsusiecting persons in Oregon. The state department Is au thority for the statement that the Ore gonlans have been even more gullible than the ordinary run of "come-ons." So many suckers were found that they formed the Oregon Society of I'nlted Pescendents of Huron Theobalk Metzer von Welbnom. Attorneys were secured to prosecute their claims and David J. Hill, I'nlted States min ister at The Hague was requested to assist them. Minister Hill thought that the victims were so widespread that he again called the attention of the state department to the swindle. As early as i8.S, according to state department officials, inquiries regard ing Imaginary estates In Holland be came so great that the I'nlted States minister made a report setting forth the fraudulent character of the publl ci'tlons soliciting suoscrlptlons In money from parties living in the I'nlted Stales. Since then there have been the "Anneke-.Ians." tiie "Cronk helt." the "Van Cot." the "Van Iius sen." the "Webber." the "Brant" and the "Metzger." These fictitious "es tates," which are supposed to repre sent millions, actually represent noth ing. "These estates do not exist," says Minister Hill. "The lire myths; wlll-o'-the-wlsps, fakes. The "Hank of Holland.' in which the unclaimed mil linns' fire alleged to be deposited, does not exist. Careful Investigation In 'hues the belief ibat these estates originated In the brain of sonie rascal speculator or speculators, who, im posing on human credulity. found many victims and flwoced them most profitably. "If these estates ever had a bona fide existence, they came clearly with in the purview of the statute of limit ations passed by the Dutch parlia ment in lSf)2, by which alf unclaimed Inheritances escheated after a lapse of five years to the state. Every dollar spent in reference to these estates Is ho much money wasted." Frightfully Ruined. Chas. XV.
