The building and equipment of the portage road at Celilo evidently did not close that affair, as far as A. McL. Hawks, an engineer of Tacoma, la concerned. Mr. Hawks claims back salary amounting to over $7000 and has sent his bill to Dr. N. O. Blalock, of Walla Walla, who was one of the chief pro moters or the portage. The Walla Walla Union says of the matter: Evidently believing that Dr. N. G. Blalock was responsible for the obli gations of the state of Oregon in building the portage road around The Dalles of the Columbia In 1904, A. McL. Hawks, an engineer of Tacoma, has begun suit against the doctor for the collection of 7422.70, for services alleged to have been performed in connection with that undertaking. The complaint alleges that Engineer Hawks performed certain duties as consulting engineer of the reasonable value of IS065, for which he has so far received only the sum of 1642.30. The particular labor which he per formed, so says the complaint, was In making an estimate of the cost of the road and giving his personal at tention and cupervlsion to the letting or contracts and the performance of the work. The case was first instituted In P1erc county, the bpme of the plain tiff, but upon motion of Dr. Blalock, the Case was transferred to Walla Walla county, .. When seen lsurt evening by a. rep resentative of the Union, Dr. Blalock said he attached no Important to the suit, but considered It rather as a means of staying execution of a Judg ment he held against Engineer Hawks for money advanced him while he was trying to secure the contract for the construction of the portage road. For that service he performed for the Open River association the doctor says Mr. Hawks was paid In full at the rate of 125 per day. He was hired In the first place as a consulting engineer, but had . a mis understanding with the engineer of the state of Oregon a few days after he was on the work, and waa after that of little benefit to the committee from the Open River association. EXPECT FOhTV-CE.VT CORN. A Three-Cent Spread Has Been Cre ated Between February and May. There is a 3-cent spread between February and May corn, which some figure pays 12 per cent to carry It Into May, says the Chicago Livestock World. This Is a very full carrying charge, as there are only 71 days to May. Cash corn Is under 40c for the first time In several years and the cash situation presents less attractive ness to the buyer than has been known In more than two years. May sold down to within a fraction of the low point of the season, and closed with a net loss of 1 l-8c, while other months lost l-23-4c. There la nothing In the Immediate situation In the corn market to encourage buying for a large advance, and senti ment has become almost too excess ively bearish. Trade la all looking for May to sell down to 40c. From now on It will be Interesting to watch the action of western farmers with corn at under 40c here. It means a much lower price to them than they have been accustomed to of late years, and the question is, Will they sell freely? There are no big Interests on either side of the market at present, and the disposition Is to play the short side, exports were a little over 4,000,000 bushels for the week. Available sup plies are Increasing, but are only 2, 000,000 larger than last year. Until there Is a decided Improvement in the domestic and export demand, or some thing new develops to help the bull, prices are expected to be governed mainly by pit operations. WHAT IS Advertising?
