Johnson of FaJrvlew farm has been awarded a contract for another four years on the mail route between Weston and Brlggson station. The service Is three times weekly at $250 per year. The contract between Brlggson ana Tanks has not yet been awarded. Miss Belle Read, a former student of the Weston Normal, who has beei. teaching at Sparta, Ore., of late, has passed the civil service eexamlnatlon, and will soon leave to Join the gov ernment corps of teachers In the Philippines. W. H. Fletcher and son Fred, have gone to Alberta to look over the country. "Colonel" Clark Wood aspires to be known hereafter as the potato king of Gardena. He expects to plant 16 acres at that place, where he has lartre land Interests. The city council at a recent meet ing granted a liquor license to .7. Stewart & Son, proprietors of the White House saloon, at $800. Some of Weston's leading citizens left for Pendleton last evening, where they are attending the democratic convention today. Mrs. William Blair and family have gone to Hlesler, Crook county, where they expect to make their home. The Weston fire department will celebrate Washington's birthday with a grand ball next Thursday evening. La Branche Bros, will furnish the music. A rag time party was given Tues day evening at the home of G. W. Warner, near Brlggson, which was a very enjoyable affair. Mrs. A. O'Harra and Dan Pender- gast left Wednesday for Lind, Adams county, Washington, to close a deal for land which will be farmed by Mr. Fendergast. Vallace Jfelson has accepted a po sition as telegraph operator and as sistant agent at the depot. F. H. Beathe shipped a carload of rolled oats from his mill to Echo Monday. The Afternoon club met Saturday at the home of Mrs. G. W. Proebstel. Mrs. D. W. Warner is entertaining the club today. Purchased Land at Gardena. Horatio Shelton, formerly a resi dent of Pry Creek, near Weston, has purchased a 17-acre tract of con toured land at Gardena at $150 per acre. He expects to reside on this place with his family. Fine Horse. A company of Weston farmers re cently purchased the bay Percheron stallion, aged 5 years, from William Lowell, for which .they paid $360u. This is one of the finest horses In this section of the country. the management of James Ross, largely attended. The roads are slick In some places and bare In others, making travel a little unpleasant at present. Ben Denis, of Ukiah, who Is suf fering from rheumatism. Is a little better today. The pesky coyotes now gather In bands and howl day and night The snow melting and then forming Ice making It hard for them to get .any thing to eat, so that a chicken Is not safe on the roost. The deputy sheriff of Walla Walla was here again yesterday and found another stolen horse which had been transported here by the Tuttle outfit. Tuttle Is now In jail In Walla Walla, awaiting the action of the court Mrs. Carrie Connell last month made 250 rolls of butter, which at the present prices shows that butter mak ing under good management is a good paying business. The ranching districts about Oka nogan lake in the Interior of British Columbia are confronted with a grave difficulty In connection with the wild horses in that sections, says a Vic toria, B, C. dispatch. These animals have Culile friiiil fanch horses which n the earlier days became separated from the main herds. These are now pronounced untamable. There are hundreds of them, the winters being so mild that the animals find no dif ficulty In picking up a living on the mountains during the whole year. These wild horses have long been a source OI troume to rancners as bands of tame animals are constantly being drawn from by these wild horses. From time to time there have been agitations In favor of the exter mination of these wild equlnes and various plans have been suggested. A new source of danger has now; arisen and will likely lead to the de cree that all wild horses be killed off. The government has been approch ed on the subject and will sanction the movement.
