What do you know, little boy, little bov. Of the years that hltherward run, Bright with life's gold or gray with alloy, Dripping with tears or smiling In Joy? What of their prize unwon? What are they bearing to curse you or bless? What shall they build or de- strov? A What of the path that your feet shall press What do you know, little boy? What do you know, little girl, little girl, Dreaming your dream of bliss? 4 What shall the fabric of years unfurl, Straight from the loom whence our life-webs whirl? What shall you gain or miss? Little heart broken, or little soul glad? Days as of Jet, or of pearl? How shall the on-sweeping mor- rows be clad What do you know, little girl? A. J. Waterhouse. WELCOME THE TOCRISTS. House there was an outbreak of, the same- sort, though not to the same extent, and he and his wife were pur sued on the wedding trip by packs of people with cameras and field glasses. . Not only has political Influence been used to solicit Invitations to Miss Roosevelt's wedding, but rich vulgar ians, not even acquainted with the Roosevelt or Longworth families, have sent In costly presents with re quests for an Invitation to the wed ding! Nothing can be more vulgar nor more exasperating. It Implies that Invitations are put up to trade for wedding presents, and the low suggestion Is very properly resented. These Incidents are by no means representative of American society. They are Illustrative of the vulgar and reprehensible class of "climbers" who have no motive In life except to get into what in their ignorance and besotted ambition they suppose to be social high life. The only compliment there Is In a wedding invitation Is Its voluntary bestowment upon one who is esteemed as a friend oc the parties, and of their families. If bestowed or accepted for any other reason It loses all significance. The president and the Longworths naturally wish that this occasion, of so much Interest to them, shall re tain in all of its features the sanctltv of the family and the friendly rela tion. They desire that it shall have no political or other significance at which good taste revolts. Such be ing their desire the annoyance to which they have been subjected by the "climbers" must be immeasura ble. It would be proper punishment to expose the impudent and ignorant creatures who have In any way solic ited Invitations, to the end that the press of the country might gratify their desire for social notoriety by flaying them to a finish, and making them bear a burden of ridicule and reprehension that would be a warning to all the low bred snobs of the future. SCOFFING AT DECENCY, Tomorrow the tourist rate of J 25 from Missouri river points to the Pa cific coast goes Into effect. ' How will Pendleton welcome the tourist? What will she offer him as a memento that such a place exists on the map? What does she place be fore him, by which he may know the resources, advantages, inducements and surroundings of this greatest county in eastern Oregon? There Is no literature concerning the county to distribute, there Is no exhibit of resources at the depot there Is nothing to attract him to Pendleton, nothing to Invite him to stop over and view the county and perhaps become an investor. What does Pendleton hope to se cure from the heavy travel promised on the cheap rate and how does she hope to secure It? It seems that there Is a field for work In all the various circles in the city. All the business interests here are Interested in securing new blood new money, .new settlers, new enter prises. This is a common platform on which all can stand. Then why not get together and print some liters ture, fix up some exhibits and make a showing for the county at the de pot? The tourist will be attracted and good results will surely follow. RAMPANT SNOBBEKY. The action of society people, so called, In regard to the wedding of Miss Roosevelt, Is an exhibition of snobbery that has never been equaled In this country, says the San Fran cisco Call. It has compelled the president In self-defense to Issue an explanation concerning the invlta tatlons and their number. While the lady Is the daughter of the president of the United States, her marriage Is none the less a purely personal matter, affecting only the two families concerned, who are Just as free In the matter of Invitations to the ceremony as If all of the parties were In private life. When Mr. Cleveland was married In the White A casual remark dropped by State Treasurer Moore, to a reporter of a Portland paper yesterday regarding the movement for municipal decency in Salem gives a true Insight Into the sentiment of many seemingly con scientious and capable men. In speaking of the movement to clean out gambling and immorality in Salem, Mr. Moore calls tnose who are behind the movement, "the purity people," as though It were a reproach for a man to stand for cleanliness and public honor. Who Is Moore, that he should be little the honest efforts of the people of Salem or of Oregon, or of the United States for cleansing the gov ernment of its parasites, both finan cial and moral? Instead of speaking slightingly of such movements. Instead of standing aloof while conscientious citizens are fighting for the betterment of society. men like Moore, who have enjoyed the bounty of their fellow citizens, should at least lend their moral support to any movement which promises better conditions. Such sentiment from leading men, not only of Oregon, but of other states. Is the chief cause of this wide spread public dishonesty which has shaken the country from center to circumference within the past few years and In the eradication of which all the available forces of the govern ment have been devoted with great cost. Every man in a responsible life either In public or private life, owes his best effort to society. In stead of discouraging every thinking and law-abiding man should encour age public cleanliness, decency and In tegrity, as well as private cleanliness and Integrity. Through the sunless hours at his weary work The miner tolls in the damp and murk. Cabined In gloom, what part does he play v In the whirl of the world where we know the day? Doing her sixty miles or more. The train rushes by with a booming roar. City and hamlet across the land Binding fast In her flying band. Speeding the soldier home again. Speeding the widow, the girl and the bride Freighted with grief, with mirth. with pride. Rushes the train. And the thousands go By grace of the moiling man below! Consul Worman, of Three Rivers, Canada, reports that the shutting out of American hogs going Into Canada under bond has raised a storm among the Dominion pork packers, who claim that they can not get nearly enough home hogs to keep their fac tories running. Mr. Fearman, one of the packers, claims that the American hogs do not bring disease Into the country, that the product Is not sold abroad as Can adian pork, and Canadian labor is now curtailed In favor of American pack ing house employes. BASE BALL GOODS WE HANDLE THE CELEB RATED THE WANDERER. Upon a mountain height, for from rho sea. ..,-.. . . - I found a shell. And In my listening ear this lonely - thing - . Ever a song of ocean seem'd to sing Ever a tale of ocean seem'd to tell. How came the shell upon the moun tain height? Ah, who enn say Whether there dropped by some too careless hand Whether there cast when oceans swept the land, Ere the eternal had ordained the day. Strange, was It not? Far from Its native deep, One song It sang; Sang of the awful mysteries of the , tide, Sang of the restless sea, profound and wide Even with echoes of the ocean rang. And as the shell upon the mountain height Sang of the sea. So do I ever, wandering where I may, Sing, O my home! sing. O m home! of thee! Eugene Field. THE COAL MINER. Happy is the land under the sway of such bountiful potentates. Sometime prince and sometime pauper, according to the high authority of Andrew Carne gie, steel has come Into its own and Is wallowing In wealth. With a net Income of nearly $120.- 000,000, as revealed In the report 'of the United States Steel corporation to day, Prince Steel may well smile at his days of beggary. These net earn ings represent a total business of something like 1500.000,000, and that Is the product of an army of 165,000 of the best paid artisans of all the world. Moreover, the new year was started with orders on the books for more than 7.000.000 tons of finished goods, more by 2.000,000 tons than ever before reported. These figures are staggering In their magnitude. They are highly significant to the ordinary man be cause they reflect the amazing pros perity of the country. It is true that the net earnings of the steel trust were more than 8133,000 000 In 1902, but the indications are that 1906 will be the banner year, and will show the most marvelous development In the steel trade that the world has e see;i. The earnings of the trust for the last three months of 1905 make a new high record for the final quarter of any year, and every quarter of 190 Is likely to set a new high water mark. Four words sum up the total of her Ideal Love, Sympathy, Sacrifice, Ac tlon each word typifies a chapter from the life of this useful young woman, who through all her years has been battling In the shadows to make better men and women of the world's hopeless, forlorn and forsaken multitudes. Her Christianity Is broader than creed, her charity knows only want, and the Lord's vineyard Is the world that lies about her.
