Sad Story of Union County T.uil Wlirt Wiw Loft Uxm Hie World liy Cruel Parents Now In .lull at Union, Where Ho Awaits Sentence for Stmlliie Whiskey IVoin Elgin S. loon. In one of the steel cells of the Union county Jail Is a boy 15 years of age. awaiting sentence, says n Union dispatch. This lad Is charged with breaking Into a saloon and stealing two quarts of whiskey. The crime was committed In Elgin December S last, and since that dale he has been confined In the county Jail awaiting the action of the grand Jury. The grand Jury' found a true bill and the boy has pleaded guilty. The Judge Is withholding sentence. This boy has a history which Is per haps similar to that of many who have transgressed the law. His his tory, though short. Is sufficient to demonstrate that the boy Is not wholly blameablo for his present pre dicament. According to his statements his case Is much like that of "Topsy" who "Just growed." His parents. It seems, felt their responsibilities re garding him ended about the time he learned to walk. T'luy have taken no pains to assist him to an education. In fact, their appreciation of parental obligation is about on a par with that of the sal nron which leaves its egtra In the stream, trusting to nature and the elements to rear Its young. Yet the fields nnd pastures must be fenced. The posts must be had. The annual production of fence posts In the regular logging camps of the country, as reported by the Inst census. Is 8,715,661. How many times greater than this Is the annual cut from the home wood lot no figures exist to show, but by taking the total number of the farms and their acre age and making a conservative allow ance for posts for the fence Inclosing each farm, It has been estimated that upwards of 1,0(10,000,000 posts are set each year. Such figures are too vast to mean anything. Even the nine million posts of the census are a mere drop In the bucket ns compared with the unreported production, would, If set 15 feet apart, girdle the earth, or would build a solid idle P5 feet wide. 40 feet high, and 0 mile long.
