OF THE INLAND EMPIRE
Awful Mild nt YuklniH.
Thin morning at 6:15 the fire de
partment responded to a call pent In
from the home of Harry Corbett at
No. 7 South Eighth street. There Is
an acetylene plant In the house and
when the servant irtrl attempted to
light the gas she twisted off the end
of the pipe. Instantly there was a
stream of fire shooting to the celling.
The gas was at once turned off from
the outsldo and as the plaiterlng pro
tected the woodwork, but little dam
age was done. The firemen had a
hard time getting to the fire with the
chemical engine on account of the
wretched condition of the streets. The
team stuck fast four different times
on the way and on this account the
firemen are very much of the opinion
that the whole city should be paved.

Workmen In excavating for the
foundation of Thomas Brennan's
blacksmith Rhop recently unearthed a
number of Hop Gold beer bottles that
were found under tho ground at a
depth of about 18 Inches. While this
discovery Is a strange one, It can be
easily accounted for. The beer dn
doubteflly came from Chris Borcher's
saloon, which was washed away In the
Hcppncr flood. It probably floated
away and was deposited In the mud
that was left by the water. When
taken out and sampled the beer was
found to he In perfect state of preser
vation and was as good as the day
It was bottled after having been buried
In the ground for two and a half
years. Heppner Gazette.
