DAILY EAST ORBGONIAN, PENDLETON, OREGON, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1908. PAGE SEVEN. j AMONG THE EXCHANGES i OF THE INLAND EMPIRE J ,11 Grande Willi tH a Federal lliilldlng. The La Grande postofflce and fnlted States land office today receiv ed letters from the secretary of the treasury nnd from the commissioner of the general land office requesting 'Information relative to the require ments of public buildings for La Grande. This Information Is the r fault of the Bill Introduced by Senator Fulton ap propriates 1125,000 fr a federal hulldlnjr In this city. If Ln Grande Is awake to her Interests there Is no re; i ho n why the government will not hulld n sultuble building at this point. If we do not take a decided Interest In this matter. It Is Just possible that we may lose a portion of the federal offices we now possess. La Grande Observer. lug fed this winter on Governor Gooding's ranch at Gooding, besides about 20,000 head more which are on his ranches In Blaine county. Ilolae Statesman. linker City Set nil Example. The effort of .Mayor Charles A. Johns to clean First street of red lights Is receiving strong support and assistance from unexpected sources. Tho recent action of the Pacific States Telephone & Telegraph com pany In buying a frontage on First street right In the center of the ques tionable district, whoro It will Imme diately In the spring erect Its new modern central station and general of fice building. Is the first step toward the desired end. Property In that block has ulready advanced 25 per cent In value on selling price demand ed and there Is good evidence that the entire block will be rebuilt and oe, cupled for business purposes thli year. Haker City Democrat. Why Not Manufacture Lumber? Very few Baker City people who visit South Baker or pass along the railroad tracks and . Bee the smoke coming out of the lumber mill stacks know that the shop lumber from these mills, or what In the old-fashioned eastern lumber mills was called refuse. Is now being shipped by the million feet under special contract at high price to Milwaukee, Chicago and other middle western points, where It Is being manufactured into sash and doors and shipped back to Oregon. Wouldn't it be a good Idea to put a sash and door factory In Baker City? Baker City Democrat, Starving Their Horses. It has been a custom with many heartless people In Baker county to work their horses for all they are worth during the summer and then turn them out to rustle on the range during the winter. This winter In particular has been very hard on these horses and many are dying. Munv ranchers throughout the coun ty refuse to take up these horses and feed them because they believe they can get no pay for the same. So many Inquiries and statements to this effect have been made that the atten tion of these ranchers should be called to tho estray law of Oregon. Baker City Herald. l"-iilliir Accident to Hyp. J. P. Perrln, foreman of Governor Gooding's sheep ranches at Gooding and In Illalne county, was the victim of in accident which way result In the loss of nn eye. Schwartz & Budelman's warehouse went down nnd some goods were more or less damaged. They will lose considerable grain. George Shaw's burn at his ranch east of this city fell In and W. M. Stew. art's barn at his Poison creek home, went down Thursday evening. Mr, Stewart was nt the barn at the time and fortunately got all his Btock out before It fell. Burns Times-Herald. Bottlaar ob lin TMbs A certain captain In Colombo mi an inveterate gambler. I saw your reflection In the glass. You were measuring the height, and, knowing what wus to follow, I took the precau tion while you were out for a stroll of having an inch sawed off the legs!" Fire at Perry. This morning about 11 o'clock fire was discovered In the dry kiln of the Grand Honde Lumber company's plant at Perry, and before the fire depart ment could get action on the fire the building was one mass of flames. Tho attention of the firemen was then di rected to saving the planing mill which was adjoining. The loss Includ Ing building and stock will not foot up to more than (1500. Few clgttr smokers are aware that all cigars are named according to their color and shape. A dead black cigar, for Instance, is an "Oscuro," a very dark brown one is a "Colorado Madu- ro," a durk brown is a "Colorado, a medium brown is a "Colorado Claro,' and a yellowish light brown is a Claro." Most smokers know the names of the shades from "Claro" to "Colora do," und that is as far as most of them need to know. As to the shapes, a "Na poleon," the biggest of nil cigars, is seven Inches long; a "Perfecto" swells in the middle and tapers down to a very small head at the lighting end; a Panntela" Is a thin, straight up and down cigar without the graceful curve of the "Perfecto;" a "Conchas" is very short und fat, nnd a "Londrew" is shap ed like a "Perfecto," except that It does not taper to so small a bead at the lighting end. A "Keina Victoria" Is a "Loudres" that comes packed in ribbon tied bundle of fifty pieces in stead of in . the usual four layers of thirteen, twelve, thirteen and twelve. The natives licliove that If a person dies while In an unmarried state his or her soul Is doomed to wander about through mdless ages of eternity In an Intermediate region between heaven and hades. At the end of each moon they ar allowed to look Into heaven. but are never permitted to enter. Sensible Advice. A writer who had made a good bit of money at a slnglo shako of the bag went to Chnrles lieade for advice ss to Investments. "Well," said Hoadc, "I should say put It In the best gilt edged securities.
