It does not mat ter how much you spell It, some one else will spell It differently. So there Is no use In your losing sleep over such a trifling matter. It is JusCabout as easy to take the crook out of a man's back as to attempt lo regulute the spelling of the name of the river and the street referred to. It Is spelled four different ways by the people of this valley. The Re public has been for years attempting to train the people to spell It a cer tain way, but they seem lo take no heed. Here are the four ways of spelling It: Naches. Natches. Natchez. a Nocheese. The Republic has adopted the first spelling because that Is the way the geographers of the government have sought to pass upon It at one of their solemn sittings. Natches may be correct; Natchez might be correct, but Nocheese should be the correct way. Many people confound the name with that of "Natchez," the Indian name of a city In Mississippi; but there is no connection between the two. Nocheese Is the Indian name given to the stream In years gone by. How, when and by whom It was thus christened nobody knows. Prior to assum ing his present office the attorney general of Missouri was, perhaps, 20 pounds heavier. But boodle-fighting and a bleaching campaign against ugly blemishes on the record of his ..state have left him spare of frame .as of face. Attorney General Hadley began by expressing surprise at the sensation created by the present hearing. "To a certain extent," he modest ly protested, "it is regrettable in that It places us (the other one of the us is Assistant Attorney General Lake) In a false position before the public. We are not courting notoriety nor do we bring any message to the east from the west other than that has to do with simple enforcement of the law. Missouri, like New York and juany other states, has had the wool pulled over its ees since the memory of man runneth not to the contrary. Its residents have been Rip Van Win kles, chloroformed by various power ful interests, Industrial, financial and political. "Whv. this New York hearing Is ter of himself and of his environment, But the law Is the law, and when any man In this country can safely set himself above it, can convey the im pression that special statutes must be formed for him and his kind, this will no longer be a government for, by and of the people. That is one big principle involved In this case the American people themselves are on trial and are themselves the sole Judge and Jury. The hard native sense of the people has been aroused. They have taken a tonic and have found that It agreed with them. They have found that a law enforced is the best investment a taxpayer can muke. The decent majority has routed the lawless minority and can do It again. There was no boodllng In the last legislature. Boodlers who have es caped Imprisonment have felt the fire of public ostracism.
