Somewhere in the waters of the bay is the body of a thief who sank to his death rather than be captured by his pursuers, and perhaps sent to prison and disgraced for his crime, says the San Francisco Call. It was a tragic occurrence even for the water front, where the commonplace Is ever sub ordinate to things of unusual charac ter. The name of the thief will re main forever unknown, In all proba bility, for no one could be found who Identified him during the brief period when he sought to evade the officers of the law and failed. That was a brave man," said a sailor who saw the chase. "He was a thief, but he put up a plucky fight to get away and then died game when lie saw that he was sure to be caught." The tragedy happened a little after midnight yesterday morning. A man was seen slouching along the piers north of Market street, and Special Officers T. E. Agnew, of the Ameri can-Hawaiian Sugar company, watch ed him closely. At pier 26 a barrel of wine stood conveniently close to the shadow nf a piling. It was the chance the thief had been looking for. He looked around for a moment to see that no one was watching. Agnew had stepped In the shadow of a build ing and was unnoticed by the thief. Just as the man was about to carry off the wine barrel Agnew stepped out of the shadow. "Halt," he cried. The thief took one startled look around, saw Agnew and then turned and sped down the long row bf piers. Agnew started the chnse and rapid ly gained on his man. A few yards ore and he would have caught him. The thief saw that It was useless to run farther, and without hesitation, he leaped Into the chill waters of the bay. . i , '.v Ho reckoned without knowledge of Agnew. The officer shouted out to tho Nebraska, and the quartermaster of that ship heard the call. He saw tho swimming thief and jumped Into a small boat. He gained rapidly. The thief saw that ho was caught. Again he did not hesitate. With a deliberation that was heartrending, he throw up his arms and sank to his death. He came up once and went down again. There was the circle of ripples where he had disappeared. That was all. . The quartermaster of the Nebraska rowed about for an hour, but could find no trace of him. He had died rather than be caught and disgraced. DAILY MARKET REPORT. Ilu) Ing and Selling Prices of Produce I aln 1,1 In Pendleton. Fruit Apples, J1.60 to J2 per box.
