AMONG THE EXCHANGES
OF THE INLAND EMPIRE
Waller G rover ArreHtcd.
Owing to some difficulty unex
plained uh yet, on Information filed by
District Attorney Lomax yesterday,
and a warrant Issued by Justice of the
Peace Alf L. Currey, Walter Orovcr
was arrested on a charge of the lar
ceny of a horse from Hlndman's
barn In Haker City, the property of
Frank Knlsley. Orovcr was placed
under 8260 bonds to answer to the
circuit court.
Walter Drover Is the son of a large
rancher In Eagle valley, and It Is
known that In 1905 they sold some
thing like 820,000 worth of cattle to
local butchers and dealers. The fam
ily Is among the pioneer settlers of
the county and It Is presumed that
there must be In this some misunder
standing or mlx-up, possibly growing
out of the Puixley case tried In the
circuit court yesterday. Baker City

Vto "Looking for Mamma."
A terrible story comes from Lib
erty, In this county. A couple living
there have two children, a boy of six
and a girl of two years. A few nights
ago the parents decided to attend a
danoe In the neighborhood. They
left the children asleep In bed. When
they returned about 12 o'clock, the
'. little ones were gone. An all-night
search failed to locate them, but In
the morning they were found near
the house In the snow. The boy's
, feet were bo badly frozen that both
had to be amputated at the ankles.
The little girl had to have all her
toes taken off. The reason that her
feet were not frozen was due to the
fact that her brother had put a pair
of stockings on her before they left
the house, while he went barefoot lu
the snow. When found, and asked
. why they had left home, the boy said
they were "looking for mamma."

PENDLETON HIDE MARKET.
Prices on All 1 Helen Have Greatly In
creased In Past Year.
Perhaps the greatest advance made
In the price of any common commod
ity In Umatilla county within the past
year has been on hides.
Although the price of beef has ad
vanced but little, yet the butchers sell
their hides for almost double what
they were worth this time last year,
The Industry has been greatly stimu
lated by the larger domand for boots
and shoes caused by the Russo-Japanese
war and the fnllure of the hide
supply in South American- countrlos
to cume up to the usual standard.
L.,Shnuk & Co., one of the most
extensive hide firms In this part of
Oregon, handle large quantities of dry
and green hides and sheep pelt! In
this city and the following prices are
glvon by thli firm.
This week the following prices pre-
make the trip here today and then
wait a better stage of water.
"It was necessary last night to get
a line and drag the boat Into the
dock," said Captain Baughman.
"There was not enough water to float
in, though most of the load was left
at way points on the river. The boats
can run but they cannot carry any
freight. The gauge at Rlparla when
I left yesterday morning registered
1.5 feet and the river fell three In
ches during the day. Snake river
raised a little last night, but the Clear
water Is still falling, and Is nearly
as low as It was before the late rain."

officials for authority to furnish La
Grande two cars of company coal to
relieve the situation until our dealers
