WILL ENFORCE LAW AT YAKIMA New Administration Pledge Adher ence to Morals. George Hunter Is now marshal of the city. Mr. Hunter was appointed to this office Monday night by Mayor Reed nnd the council unanimously ap proved his appointment, says the Yak ima Dally Republic. James Curran, whom he succeeded, has held the of fice for two years. Mr. Hunter was his main standby during that time. He has made a good officer and his ap pointment was asked for by a large number of the leading business men. The new chief of police will have many new duties to perform during the yenr. This year particularly he will have his hands full. After ap pointing him to the place Mayor Reed give him Instructions to rid the city of gambling rooms. He said that gambling has been running openly In some of the saloons nnd the private boxes are more numerous than in the days when the law was not so strin gent. Mayor Reed gave the new mar shal full power to act and to raid every place where he believes that gambling Is carried on. The mayor has also instructed the marshal to get after the macques that have been infesting the red light dis trict and making their presence ob noxious to decent people on the streets. "I want these people run out of the city," said Mayor Reed Wednesday. "I shall have given Marshal Hunter full power to act and I want him to do his duty. I also want the red light district straightened out and put on a little more orderly basis. Gam bling Is the worst thing to contend with. I mean to stamp It out. I have no use for the gamblers and will make things pretty lively for them during my campaign." Hereafter All Payments Must Ho Made llrect to tlte Treasurer, us the Re corder Will Not Accept Money l' tm the License Accounts Recorder Will Issue License VHn Receipts by the Trcn surer Plumbers' Licenses Issued Annually, nnd to Saloons Scini-niiimnlly. This Is the time for the renewal of city licenses, us all excepting those of saloons expired on the last day of the year. In making the payments this time all parties are required to go before the city treasurer Instead of the recorder, as was done In the past. Formerly Recorder Fit Gerald received money upon license, simply as a matter of accommodation. How ever, such a policy was found to lead to confusion In his bookkeeping, nnd he now says thut people wishing to make payments upon licenses must go to the treasurer or go to Jail. After the money has been paid to the treas urer the receipt given by that offic ial Is taken to the recorder, and upon Its presentation the license Is Issued. With the exception of the plumbers' licenses, which are issued annually, and saloon licenses, which are paid semi-annually, all the city licenses are issued quarterly. The first quarter commences January 1, and conse quently payments have been due since then. For drays and hacks a license of t- iur one norse and $2.50 for each ouuiuuiibi norse is charged. The ineater license Is 125 per quarter. "THE GIRL FROM SWEDEN." Quaint Old Comedy at tlie Frascr i lanuury 12. Tho attp.,ntlnn .. .... rnuuy, January 12. will be the K..-.1 ih dialect comedy drama.
