Boise, Jan. 1. James Deweese, a
negro employed by the 'antnrlum In
cleaning clothes, was frightfully burn
ed shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday
afternoon by the explosion of some
gasoline on the garment upon which
he was working. The Injured man
was removed to St. Alphonsus hospi
tal, where his wounds were dressed,
and he was reported during the even
ing to he resting easily.
Deweese was working at the time
In a one-story brick building In Levy
alley, back of the Hush building nt
Seventh and Idaho, In which the Pan-
totorluin is located. He was scrubbing
a coat with gasoline, and this In some
manner took fire, and In a second the
entire room was In a blaze. While
nothing Is known, It Is surmised there
may have been a match in one of the
eoat pockets, and (his was Ignited by
the friction of the bi iish, setting fire
to the gasoline.
With great presence of mind, De
weese rushed from the burning room,
and began to pluek his flaming clothes
off. His heavy navy shirt was burned
to shreds, as were also Ills trousers,
but fortunately he wore u woolen
undershirt beneath the outer one, and
this stayed the flames long enough to
permit the file to be extinguished.
Had It not been fur this, there seems
little doubt but that Deweese would
have been burned to death.
As It was his hands and face wore
simply peeled off In great flakes, an 1
his face, up to the rim of his felt hat
he wore, Is in terrible condition. It is
not believed, however, his injuries are
fatal.
