MITCHELL HISTORY BURNED. . t 'Bonn of die Dead Senator Destroy , Valuable Records. i A complete political history of the state of Oregon was burned tho other day, says the Oregon. Dally Journal. When John H. Mitchell, Jr., and Hi ram E. Mitchell finished the work of examining the records and documents jn the offices of their father, the late United States Senator John H. Mitch ell, after many days devpted to It, they destroyed practically very letter that had been received by the depart ed statesman. There was an Immense mass of corrspondence. for Senator Mitchell from the first day, of partici pation Iri polities kept every political letter of importance that .came . to him. Jt was In 1S60 he arrived In Port land from i franclsco and the fol lowlr. t .' -ar he was elected , city at torney, i'he next year he went to the legislature and was president of the senate. He soon became a prominent figure In the political system of the commonwealth. He was exceedingly accommodating and made it a prac tice never to refuse a favor within his power to grant. People in every city, town and ham let and on hurlreds of farms wrote to Senator Mitchell when they wanted something done In Washington, and It came to be recognized that, regard less of political affiliations, he would attend to any detail there, no matter what Its nature, and without hope of reward. The result was that Senator Mitch ell had on his correspondence list hundreds, perhaps thousands, of per sons, who virtually made him run er rands for them at Washington. His letter files grew voluminous until they were an enormous mass, yet he never destroyed a letter. Therefore, for 45 years past his of fice records told the yearly chapter that was added to the political story of the state. Important events were mentioned, vital Issues were Bet forth, more or less secret matters found their places among the nrnhlves. Practically all this political lore was burned by his sons. The reasons for so doing were not given. ' It was sftid simply that they were sufficient. "IN TUB FIRJCLIOHT.' The fire upon the hearth ks low. And there Is stillness everywhere, And, like winged spirits, here and there The firelight shadows fluttering go, And as the shadows round me creep, A childish treble breaks the glooim. And softly from a farther room Come: "Now-1 lay me down to sleep." And, somehow, with that little prayer 'And that sweet treble in my ears, My thought goes back to' distant years. And lingers with a dear one there; And as I hear my child's amen, "My mother's faith comes) back ts ...me - " Crouched at her side I seen to be. And mother holds my hands again. Oh, for an hour In that dear place. Oh, for the peace of that dear time. Oh, for that childish treat sublime; ! Oh, for a glimpse of mother's face! Yet, as the shadows round me cross,, I do not seem to be alone Sweet magic of that treble tone And: "Now I lay me down to sleep." Eugene Field.
