Postmaster Llvermore and force have worked long hours and have made every effort o meet the de- muiuls upon the office without the employment of additional help, and as the rush Is now thought to be over the remainder of the holiday season will be easily handled. An enormous number of packages have been sent this season to foreign countries, most of these being In the shape of souvenirs of Pendleton ana Umatilla county and will serve to ad vertise this city in many out of way coiners of the world. The Christmas trade was especially heavy and an unusual amount of heavy mall has been sent out. TO SURVEY WATER SOURCE. Tonight the last council meeting of the present city administration will be held, and Us affairs will be really brought to a close, though tho offi cials do nut go out of power until the end nf the year. Since It will be the last council meeting, It is probable that a num ber of minor, things that have been pending will be disposed of so as to leave a clean board for the new gov ernment. However, reports will not be submitted until next meeting, as the officials will have to await the close of the year before making their annual statements. There Is a possibility that one measure of Importance may be pass, d. and that Is tho resolution ordering the macadamizing of East Court street. This Is something that has been con sidered by tho council for mnny weeks and was brought up by a petition from the residents of East Court street, asking for the Improvement. Several times during the past month It has looked as though the resolution would be passed, but the street com mittee has always declared Itself un prepared. Mayor Matlock is known to be favorable to tho present coun cil's taking action, and the matter may be put through tonight, though up to yesterday the committee had not yet decided upon the specifica tions. Already Mayor-elect James A. Fee has qualified for the position to which he was chosen, and with the change from ?io old year to the new he will become mayor. Likewise Oouncll-mcn-elect McCormmach and KM have qualified, and It is probable that the remaining new members will do so between now and the first of the year. SIGlfUND rLRADED GUIITY. No Now Developments to Prove the Char go That Ho Wan Robbed. At 10 o'clock this morning August Slgmund, who lost about 1400 while drunk Saturday, pleaded guilty to the charge of being drunk and disorderly and was fined $20 by Judge Fitx Gerald. Slgmund himself did not ap pear In court, but was represented by Attorney J. B. Perry. At first a plea of not guilty was entered, and prepa rations were made for trying tho case. However, Mr. Perry finally derided to change the plea to guilty and tho above sentence was given. Following the passing of sentence Judge Fits Gerald took Slgmund's purse, contttlnin $123.30 from the of fice safe and delivered It to the at torney. The fine was paid from this money. As to the charge made by Slgmund that ho had been rolled by Marshal Ooffman there have been no new de velopments, and it Is evident that the butcher cannot provo his charge. This morning Attorney Perry stated that unless something more should be learned no criminal complaint would be made. According to Mr. Perry, Slgmund came to town Saturday morning with $5S7. Of this IS00 In gold was tied In a rag, while the remaining $287 was in a purse. As there was but $123.30 In the purse when examined at the police station, it appears that at some time during the day the $300 was either stolen from Slgmund or lost by him, while there is little doubt but that he spent the money that was missing from his purse. According to the officers Slgmund has a bad reputation for drinking and creating trouble around town, and Saturday Is not the first time he has cut loose of late. : HOPE FOR THE I! Alt. Tollman & Co. i Leading Druggists PROSECUTIONS AT WESTON. Sunday Closing, and Selling Liquor to Minors tho Issues. District Attorney Phelps left this morning for Weston for the purpose of attending to official duties there. Yesterday he was informed by 'phone that several parties desired to make complaints against saloonmen for keeping their places open on Sun days, and on other charges. In or der to save witnesses, from the ex pense of coming here he determined to go to Weston and hear the cases there. Besides the Sunday opening cases there is one In which a saloon man Is charged with selling liquor to minors. , Marriage Uoeasm. Judge Charles H. Carey returned psterda mornni, af'er more than a month's absence. In the course of which he visited Washington, D. C, and Interviewed President Roosevelt connection with tho improvement of the Columbia river, says tho Port land Oregonlan. He brings back en couraging news relative to the matter and believes that a united effort or the part of Oregon citizens will result In forcing favorable congressional ac tion this winter. "No regular river and harbor bill will be considered by congress this winter," said Judge Carey yesterday, hence, whatever legislation . takes place will have to bo In the nature of a rider or deficiency bill. 'Senator Fulton and myself called on the president together, and he was exceedingly cordial in his reception, assuring us that he wanted to do all In his power to help us. He raid in relation to our project that he thought, while it was wholly a mat ter of the legislative branch of the government, and while ordinarily he would not feel Justified in maxing any suggestion to congress, that no wouia make an exception In this case. Remarkable Addition to Major Moor- houmw' Museum. Malor Lee Mnorhouse has become Interested in recording Indian music bv phonograph, and within the past few days has taken quite a number of Indian songs In that manner. One or the selections he secured was a war song sung by four Pocatcllos who chanced to be visiting here a few days ago. Altnougn me songs iw some iu volume, the phonographic reproduc tions are very good and furnish Inter esting entertainment. The success had so far by Major Moorhouse in this new line of Indian work indicates the possibilities of th phonograph In recording their songs. With his wide experience with the In dians and their well known friendship for him, it should be easy for Major Moorhouse to supplement his splendid collection of photographs by a collec tion of their songs "THK LYRIC QUKKN" TONIGHT. "Frou Froii" Win Listened to by a Crowded Houw. "Frou Frou" was given a fine pre sentation by Georgia Harper and her company last night. The Frazcr thea ter was well filled and the audience seemed to enjoy every moment of the play. Miss Harper's work was very good. Hhe was ably assisted by Joseph Det- idck. Isabel Mac Donald and others of the cast. Tonight "The Lyric Queen" will be put on which will close the company's engagement for the present season. It Is a comedy drama in four acts and one of the best vehicles Miss Harper has had, Now that the new city government will go Into power within a few days, Increased interest Is being taken in the marshalship, and the friends of several candidates are working con siderably In the Interest of their men. However, the fight has not yet devel oped sufficiently to make the outcome sure, and though the friends of the different aspirants each claim their man to he in the lead, it Is hard to tell where the choice will fall. The most recent candidate Is Peter Smith Klnsella, of the Hotel St. George ,and If some of his friends arc not over enthusiastic regarding his prospects, he stands a good show of landing the prlxe. When asked this morning if he were a candidate for the office, Mr. Klnsella said: "I would like to have the position if it comes to me right: that is with out a squabble, and on the square. Should I be given the place I will do my duty, showing favors to none and following the Instructions given me by the mayor and council." It Is said that three councilman have expressed themselves favorably to Mr. Smith's selection, while a fourth lias not yet pledged his sup port to anyone. Ilt'sldcs Mr. Klnsella the other can didates mentioned for the position of marshal are O. W. Coffman. present Incumbent; Arthur Gibson and Hert Wilson. Marshal Coffman, so it is said, also has several councllmen who have promised him support, and there are many who look for his re election. Gibson and Wilson are not antagonistic candidates, and seem ingly both have the same men back ing them. Under the law It is the duty of the council to choose the marsnai, wnue the mayor names the city attorney. Although the mayor-elect could doubtless greatly Influence the selec tion of a marshal, it Is apparent that Judge Fee is not taking any hand in the affair. As to who he will name as city attorney there Is still much darkness, and If he has made known his rholce to anyone the same has not become generally known. Charles H. Carter, who has held the position for several terms, It Is thought by many. will retain the office, while should republican be named, John McCourt Is mentioned as the strongest possi bility.
