Perhaps 50 clerks in Pendleton know a smattering of the Cayuse Umatllla language, which they have acquired through trading constantly with the Indiana The most common Indian words used in the stores are tho numerals, the Indians knowing the names of most of the articles, but are not always certain of the number or prices and so a knowledge of the Indi an numerals Is almost necessary to successful trading with Indian cus tomers. Since the adoption of the direct primary law completely changed the nominating system in Oregon, there are naturally many thlngse about the new law to be learned. In this the work Is made more complicated through the law Itself being framed In such a manner as to make Its provis ions rather difficult to understand.
