EVANS SENTENCED WILL SERVE TIME FOR FROM OXE TO FIVE YEARS. e Pleaded Guilty to Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses and Has Not Substantiated Any of Ills Extenu ating Stories Chapman Gets Two Tears for Running Amuck and Is Released on Parole; lie Was Drunk oa Indian Whiskey Action Taken a Two Civil Cases. Albert Percy Watmough-Evans will serve an Indeterminate sentence In the penitentiary for Issuing bogus checks to various parties in this city several weeks ago. The above sentence was pased on Percy this morning after he kad pleaded guilty to the charge of btaining money under false pre tenses. Under the sentence he may aerve from one to five years In the penitentiary, according to his behavior while there. At 10 o'clock this, morning Evans was In readiness for his arraignment and was taken upstairs to the circuit Judge's room by Deputy Joe Blake ley. In appearance the young Eng lishman was immaculate, ills hair was carefully combed, his shoes pol ished and his general attire neat as usual. He did not seem to be greatly overcome by the sentence which was Bryan him, but walked nervously up and down the corridor of the jail af ter being locked up again. Since his arrest Evans has been wholly unable to prove the story which he told of how he came to Is sue the checks through a belief that he had money In the bank drawn upon. Chapman Paroled. Will Chapman, who ran amuck with a pistol several weeks ago, was also sentenced by Judge Ellis this morning. A two-years term In the penitentiary was Imposed upon Chap man, but he was released on parole and the sentence will not be executed unless his future conduct should neces sitate It According to District Attor ney Phelps Chapman was found to have been crazed at the time by In dian whiskey, which he secured al MurrlU's saloon. Previous to the af fair his reputation was good, and It was this that saved him from the penitentiary. In the case of Lizzie Swart vs. Mar tin McLaughlin, a demurrer to the complaint was overruled, and the de fendant given three days In which to answer. In the case of John Rapp vs. the Gold Bug Mining company, the court made confirmation of sale, while in the case of M. M. Harvey vs. Victor Lidvall, the demurrer to the com plaint was overruled and tho defend ant given until December 23 to an swer. EAGLES' BALD AND BANQUET. Mrs. Johnson was at one time i resident of Pendleton, and has many friends here, while Mr. Johnson Is. a prosperous young stockman. Dancing Club. A dancing club of married couples has been formed, to have a series of dancing parties throughout the win ter. The Alexander home on Water street was the scene of a pretty card party on Wednesday evening, given In honor of Miss Lillian Rourke, of Port' land, the hostess being Miss Jessie Hartman and Miss Bertha Alexander. The house was attractive In the decor ations of Oregon grape and cut flow ers together with the brilliant illu mination of numerous electric lights and candle light. A pretty picture was formed as the plnyers at 12 tables were battling over the game of "BOO." The victor of the ladies In the contest was Miss Faye Bartholomew, and of the gentlemen, Murk Moorhouse, After the game dainty refreshments were served.
