Millions of years ago these strange animals wandered about the far northwestern country, known as the bud lands, says a correspondent in tho Denver Post. At any rate remarkable deposits of their bones have been found in Crant and Wheeler counties. Oregon, com monly called, In this section, the. John Day country. It is thought that these ungulate or hoofed aborigines pronably Inhab ited much of the Pacific slope and far northwestern section. Their bones originally may have rested In regions far apart, but were collected and deposited in that sec tion, now part of eastern Oregon, by the action of some early stream or by glacial processes. Several specimens of the gigantic dinosaur, a, kind of monster lizard of antiquity, have been unearthed In Wyoming. There is no reason to suppose that the dinosaur family dwelt In that section exclusively, yet for some rea son their bones were deposited there. Readily recognized wero the fos sils of the field mice tribe of four million yenrs ago. In every respect the scientists declare, the tiny ani mals of that time were just like those of today. Scampering about In field and for est If there wera fields and forests then nibbling at small grain and r4(ts. their habits and characteris tics then were those of their descend ants today. Perhaps they were so Insignificant In size compared with the gigantic fauna of those days, that they es caped notice. Even the hawks, owls and other enemies of present-day field mice wero probably above noticing such diminutive creatures. Llko a Deer, a Rnt and a Cnmel. Considerably larrer. hut still small for that period of glfantlc animal life, was the entoptychus, bones of which were unearthed In Wheele county. If reconstructed, this animal would he very much like a prairie dog. or marmot, but not quite so lare. It was. however, of an entirely dlf ferent sneHes. PriaMv a burrow Inc nnlmal. nnd feeding upon vereta Mes. It dou'itlss lived much after the manner of the prairie doT. Another type of the fauna of tha long-gone type, which the explnra tlons In the John Day rclon brought to light, wis the hvpertragulus. which Is thou-ht tn hiv resembled the African water chevrotaln. This was a kind of hornless ga relle. about 18 ln"hs hl;h at the shoulder, nnd a dilnty llt'.'e thing. Havlnsr some of the traits of the rodent tribe It was the smallest of the deer fiml'y. Three million yenrs or J ago It had arrived at a stage when It had the size of a present-day fox and pos sessed only three digital member. Relics of some of these have been found In part of the west. About five miles above Rltter, In Grant county. Ore., member of the University of California expedition were fortunate enough to unearth some of the remains of one of those little horses long ago. In scientific circles it Is known as the mesohlp pus acutldens. While this animal hud progressed in size considerably beyond tho fox stnge. It was much smaller than the horse of today. It was equipped, however, with three toes. The skull of this specimen was about nine Inches long and so well preserved, that lis Identity was at once established. Remains of the three-toed horse of the same period have also been found In the Dakotus and along the White river. It will probably be a surprise to many to learn that the rhinoceros once roamed America, or a part of It. Fossils of this animal, which Is now found only In Africa and Asia, have been discovered In England and In eastern Siberia. Excavations In the John Day country however, have brought to light unmistakable specimens of the two-horned rhinoceros, so that the animal at one time must hnve been numbered nmnng the types of living hlngs upon the American continent. Most of these fossils discovered by the expedition were found In the bed of tin old Inko, Indicating that they were collc-ted and deposited there by some vny ancient agency. Bones of dogs, cats nnd even monkeys were also unearthed. Of great Interest to scientists ore these discoveries, not only because of the specimen of a hitherto un known animal, but because existing fossils of others have not been suf ficiently perfect to permit exnet clas sification and description.
