But when telegrnms began pouring ia from the great common people of Aregon all political friction, preju lrr and disagreement were swept aide and the project was immediately adopted. So shall wc not give Pendleton Commercial association and Pendle ton's private citizens. Echo Commer cial club and Echo's private citizens, lrtland Commercial club and her ajaivate citizens some credit for the efeange In Hitchcock's mind on the Bast Umatilla project? Had Fulton been left to work out Bae question alone, the project would probably not have been revived after at was turned down, while Fulton was advocating It. It would have gone the way of Ful ton's other -recommendations Into toe waste basket along with dozens mt candidates for United States dis trict attorney, registers and receivers mt land offices and other suggestions aT the senator. Nobody denies that Senator Fulton t doing and has done all along, his try best for Oregon, but the unfor tunate and peculiar situation In the aUUe renders him well nigh powerless with the administration. It Is unforluliate for him and for 9te state, but It Is a fact. Right now, arhen the eyes of the world are upon regon she should muke her best showing. Tut there Is one certainty In the premises and that Is this: No matter v the president may disagree with individual representatives on person" c other grounds, yet the great cum on people can always reach his ear, and get a response. A IW I KIOTIC SPASM. A large number of newspapers are tow having a patriotic spasm because IU secretary of the navy, tiring of The great expense of longer preserv Ibg the hulk of the old Constitution. as suggested that It be removed iom Boston harbor (which is needed tar modern vessels and modern com anerce) and destroyed in some way rat entirely bacrlleglous. Eecause this old vessel took part In a sea fight of the great Btruggle for American liberty Is no reason why It sjhnuld become a burden upon the tople. The East Oregonlan claims to be as patriotic on certain occa sions, as any other ordinary newspa-ax-r, and eld relics appeal to It more saronKly than to most people, but there Is a limit even to hero-worship and rellc-kecplng. The old boat has been rebuilt and trbullt to preserve her from the ln avcds of worms and natural decay, mil she Is "herself no more. She ta now tossed at her moorings a help teas and pitiable wreck of the former gullant fighter, and reason and com mon sense dictate that something ahould be done to remove the un- sightly hulk and make place for mod ern vessels In Boston, harbor. . And let us nsk how many of those who are suffering from the thought of destroying this hulk of an old ves m'1 which has been rebuilt with mod ern lumber and canvas several times, are taking part In preserving the principles for which the Constitution foupht? How numy newspapers now shed ding tears over the threatened loss of the Constitution, the war vessel, are standing In with the. common people to preserve the Meals and meaning of the rea! constitution of the govern ment In opposition to the trusts which are eating away Its vitals as the worms afe eating away the timbers of the sloop of war, of that sonorous name? How are popular liberty and popu lar lights among the masses treated In Boston anil the state of Massachu setts, where this old hulk lies rot ting? Are the principles of thg revo lutionary fathers alive yet? Ar free dom of speech, freedom of thought and progress parts of the modern creed of Boston, or do the monopolies stifle these things with the threat of business ruin? Let us be consistent and know Just why this old wreck should bo saved before we shed any crocodile tears. The masses of the people and their rights need attention as well as un feeling hulks of old vessels. As the magnitude of the land frauds committed by McKlnley, Puter and their Infamous gang Is made public the widespread demand for the cap ture and conviction of these bold thieves becomes more emphatic. Cannot the state of Oregon and the United States government run down 'this gang and bring It to justice? Must It be Bald that after boldly stealing through forgery, perjury and fraud over $100, 000 worth of valuable land certificates, realizing the cash upon them, that this gang will go free? It' is a national disgrace which should spur the state and government to the most strenuous endeavor to bring the thieves to Justice. It will be a re flection upon the capacity of the gov ernment If they are not apprehended and lodged In prison. The people of the east end of Uma tilla county are now supplied with ex cellent bridges and roads, according to the reports of the county court. It Is especially favorable to that part of the county that a substantial bridge has been placed over the Tumalum at the old ford which has been a menace to travel for years. With the new road roller the roads of the county should be put In excellent condition within the next two or three years. The temporary repairs should be abolished In every Instance and noth ing but permanent road, on a fixed and permanent grude located by the county surveyor, should be built here after. The gamblers read the East Ore gonlan more closely now than ever. Judging from the quick response they make through their "official" organ, to anything appearing In these col umns concerning them. SUBSTITUTE FOK SALOON. Some time ago a coffee club was .started In San Diego, to nfford a place of recreation and entertainment, where no Intoxicating liquors, cigars or tobacco In any form should be sold. It was not started by a reform ele ment, pledged to philanthropy, but by a private company as a matter of le gitimate business. The agreement provided that the business should be extended with the profits of the first venture, If profitable; If not "profita ble. It should be closed out, like any other non-paying business. In due time a second club was opened In San Diego, and tater one each In Los Angeles, Santa Clara, Pa kersfield and Petaluma. All are suc cessful financially and socially. In Los Angeles the two clubs are visited lally by from 1000 to 1500 persons. It Is estimated that the saloon business has been cut down one-half In some of the towns named, by the club busi ness. The saloon element at Castle Ilock, Wash., is resorting to forgery anil threats of personal Injury to secure lepeal of the Sunday closing policy In that place. ;L1KN Nl'GGETS FltOM THE AHGONAIT. A Boston public school teacher was trying to give her pupils a definite Idea of a volcano. With red chalk she drew on the blackboard fiery flames Issuing from a mountain top. When the drawing was done, she turned to the class before her, and said: "Can any of you tell me what that looks like?" "It looks like hell. ma am," replied the minister's son, with startling promptness. A woman once told Lord Pulmcrs ton that her maid, who had been with her to the Isle of Wight, objected to going thither again because the oil mate was not "embralng" enough. "What am I to do with such a woman?" she asked. "You had better take her to the Isle of Man next time," said Lord Pnlmerston, W. S. Ciilbert, the dramatist and wit, was lunching at a country club when he found himself surrounded by six or seven clergymen who had been on a motor tour of the country there about. Pretty soon the author of the "Mikado" was drawn Into conversa tion. When his identity was known, one of the clergymen asked Mr. Ciil bert how he felt "In such grave and reverend company." "Like a Hon In a den of "Daniels," was the reply. During the Spanish war the men of a certain New York regiment, recruit ed on the East Side, were spoiling for a fight, and it became necessary to post a sentry to preserve order. A big, husky Bowery recruit, of pugilis tic propensities, was put .on guard outside, and given special orders to see that quiet reigned, and, If trouble came his way not to lose possession of his rifle. Soon a general row bo gan. The soldier walked his post nervously, without Interrupting, until the corporal of the guard appeared on the scene with reinforcements. "Why dliTn't you stop this row?" shouted the corporal. The sentry, balancing his rifle on his shoulder, raised his arms to the boxing position, and replied: "Shure, phwat could I do wld this gun In me hands!" Soon after the first baby was born, the young wife went upstairs, one eve ning, and found her husband standing by the side of the crib and gazing earnestly at the child. As she stood still for moment, touched by the sight, she thought: "Oh, how dearly Charlie loves that boy!" Her arms stole softly around his neck as she rubbed her cheek caressingly against his shoulder. The husband started slightly at the touch. "Darling," he murmured, dreamily, "It Is Incompre hensible to me how they can get up such a ciib as that for 99 cents. The Argonaut. "BLIMMIXG.' Mrs. Cralgle, the woman novelist, says: "All clever women bllm. Don't know bllmmlng? It's Just talking plesaant things." Now. every woman of you, get busy and bllm. It sounds good. "Talking and talking pleasant things." Not sensible things, mind you, not momentous things, Jut pleasant. Could anything be more softly fem inine, more sweetly amiable? And what a cleverness It must take for a woman to obliterate herself un der a becoming sea of bllmmlng, and let her husband do the strenuous part. It Is the secret of feminine suc cess In soeletv: and It Is a good moral rule for anybody. Hurrah for the woman who bllms! Seattle Star. Surreylne; Una Reinin.
