Those who keep track of affairs In
Russia note the prominence of the
grand dukes. These gentlemen of the
people enjoy sinecure unlike any
other on earth. There are over bO
of them, and each Is possessed of an
annual Income or salary of 12,000,
000, all combined Imposing a bur
Vn of 6100 000,000 a year on the
Russian people, as members or off
shoots of the royal family. Their
property, like that of the czar,
amounting to a vast sum Is untaxed.
The question may well suggest lts?lf,
why should Russia wont to borrow
funds In Paris when she has her
crand dukes untapped and even un
taxed? There Is a chance now on the
part of these titled mendicants to dis
play a little patriotism, by opening
their cash boxes. One of them. It Is
true, went to the front In the Jap
anese war, but made such a mess of
himself that he was called home In
disgrace.
Sat Upon.
Only a girl on roller skates.
Only a female defying the fates.
Only a step or two out on the floor,
Only this, then something more.
Only a man on the backward glide.
With hands outstretched and feet
sp'cad wide;
Only a bold dash, then a dull thud,
Only h serenm that would curdle your
blood.
Only a mingling of stripes in air,
Only a shower of auburn hair.
Then she sat on him by the ton.
Never was man so sat upon.
