county from November 1. 1004, to November I, lUb. was suomiiwa uy mo

ippenr. as th same was made since that date.
In the report the sum of $SO0 which was paid the experts on contract
appears under the head of coiinty court and commissioners. In the account
of the court house $2,669.!I8 Is shown to have been paid for repairs up to
November 1. This sum Is but a small portion of the total expense of re
modeling the court house. In the road and highway account there Is In
cluded J3S50 which was paid for the steam road roller purchased last sum
mer. I'nder the miscellaneous account Is Included the sum of 13723.41,
which was paid out during the period for the Umatilla exhjblt nt the bowls
and Clark fair.
The following Is the report In detail.

Grover Mason Is dead at Russia
Tills, Ind., from Injuries received in a
football game three weeks ago. He
was IS years of age.
During the season Just closed 215
lives have been lost on the Great
Lakes, of which lit were lost during
the three recent storms.
The engineers and firemen of the
Atlantic & Birmingham railroad are
on strike. For four days past not a
train of any class has moved.
A portion of the cargo of tho Patri
cia, from Dover to New York, arrived
the wealthiest men In Latah county,
and had lived there 17 years.
The county commissioners at Col
fax. Wash., unanimously refuse to
avail themselves of convict labor for
the improvement of public roads,
privilege any county In the state may
avail Itself of under a law passed by
the last session of the legislature,
The general conditions are that the
county board the convicts and guards,
and furnish all necessary tools and
teams.

The Pacific liner Siberia Is at Hong
kong from San Francisco, with a car
go valued at II. 000.000 on board, and
a bad fire in the hold. Even If any
considerable quantity of the cargo is
saved it will hardly be possible to
wve the ship. A portion of the car
go consists of 4660 barrels of flour
and 6483 bales of cotton.

kept the animal at a distance by
swinging his lantern at him, but at
times It Is said the cougar attempted
to attack the Jap In spite of the swing
ing lantern. Finally the Jap reach
ed the section house and the animal
disappeared Into the timber. A crowd
with dogs went on the trail but failed
to catch the cougar.

Denied a New Trial.
Pearl Howard, Frank Smith and
Oharles Wilson, te three men who
were convicted of holding up an In-
llan named John Malassett at the
Moxee bridge in September, 1904, and
'.vho were sentenced to 13 years apiece

new trial by the state supreme court
of Clympla. The case attracted a

the threee men are still in the county
