I unhesitat ingly recommend them to all, and don't intend in the future to be with out them ln the house. They are cer tainly a wonderful medicine, to have cured such a bad case as mine." The high school building at Spo kane will now accommodate 1600 pu pils, and that number is expected by Rome, Dec. 11. The convocation of cardinals and prelates which meets at the Vatican today is the first con sistory called by Plus X since Decem ber of lust year. As customary It will bo secret and will be followed by a public consistory on Thursday. The chief reason assigned for the long delny is that the pope was hoping that some arrangement could be mude with the French government for the filling of the ninny vacancies among the French sees. The pope hesitated to the last moment, but finding him self disappointed, flnnlly called the consistory which was necessary to se lect some additional members of the sacred college. x The consistory which meets today In secret session Is of unusual Import ance, ns It will probably select five new cardinals to fill the existing va caneles ln the sacred college. The situation Is unusually complicated and the pope was In an extremely dif ficult position ln making a selection, which would cause the lyeast dlsap-plontment. It may be said that the selection of the Italian cardina's presented great er difficulties than that of the foreign dignitaries. In the first place there are in Rome several prelates who at one time held the position of major domo of the Vatican and every one of them considered It his right to be come a member of the sacred college on that account. The former pope bad silently recoentzed this claim and had made promises to these digni taries, which his death prevented him from fulfilling. Plus X, however, is not Inclined to recognize any such Wghts and. although he has selected Mgr. Caglnno de Azevedo, for a num ber of years major domo of the Vati can for the cardltrol hat. It Is under stood, that he Intends to abolish the office of major domo. thus reducing the cost of maintaining his court to some extent. Tt was prlnrlpariv the necessity of holding down the expenses of the Vat ican, which caused the pope to hesi tate In selecting new cardinals among the pre'ates connected with the Vati can. It is understood that but one other Italian prelate will be created cardinal, Mar. Cavalarl. the patriarch of Venice. One of the foreigners to he promoted Is Mgr. Joseph Samas-, . archhlshon of A cram. Hungary, who Is now 77 years old and who was promised promotion bv the former nope. His promotion will appease the Hungarian Catholics and also please the Austrian court. Another new cardinal will he Mgr. S'nlnnla v Maes te. archbishop of Seville. Spain. It was at frlst Intended to nominate Mgr. Noza'eda. arhhlshon of Valen cia, formerly the Mtronolltan In the "blllnplne Istmds. The latter was not selected because It was feared that he mlffht he ohietionahle owing to the attitude which h hid taken in the arcbinelai prafnst the occupa tion by the Americans. Mgr. Joachim Meovnrde de Alhu- nnernue-Caval'-nntl. archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil, who is also mentioned ns one of the dignitaries scheduled for promotion, will be the first South American nrelate ever named for the snered col'ce. His se lection will probably cause tome dis satisfaction In other South American countries, hut they will be appeased In the future. Besides the se'ctlon of new cardi nals other matt-rs of Imnortanco will be considered at the consistory. Th situation In Vrance i probably one of the most Imnn-tont problems. All tb- Mshops snnoin'ed hv the propaganda durin te past vor will have their nominations confirmed bv this co-i-slstory. DIED AT "MYSTIC 1IOITR." Member of the Elks Pamcd Away at II O'clock.
