AMONG THE EXCHANGES
OF THE INLAND EMPIRE
Can Union County Barley.
Julius Roesch, proprietor of the La
Grande brewery, estimated that he
consumes fully one-third of the Union
county barley crop yearly. This sea
son he purchased 10,000 bushels of
the best brewing barley early In the
season, paying from 92 1-2 to 96 cents
a hundred. He was Indeed fortunate,
as the price of the poorest feed barley
at this time tins almost reached that
figure.
A few years back Mr. Rocsch made
a speclnlty of shipping considerable
malt from this city to Inland points
as far east as Suit Lake. The grain
markets of the east have enabled the
brewers of the more eastern points,
together with cheaper freight rates,
to purchase from the middle west.
This had cut off part of the market
from the La Grande establishment.

Brooding. Ho Khot IUnutelf.
Brooding over family troubles, and
fearing that he might bo sent again
to the asylum, George R. Hinders, a
hod carrier, committed suicide at his
home, 604 Crestline street, at an early
hour yesterday morning. He placed a
Winchester rifle In his mouth and
fired, the bullet shattering his brain,
and passing through the celling.
Hinders was married several years
abo, but the family had never been
a peaceable one. A divorce petition
was pending at the time. His wife
Uvea here In Spokane on Magnolia
street. He had a divorced wife some
place In the east, and several children
at Danville, III. Hinders was about
31 years old and belonged to the local
hod carriers union. Hpokesman-Re-vlew.

P. J. McOrall, who Is farming some
2500 acres In eastern Klickitat, was
In Gilliam county this week purchas
ing horses. He secured several head
of fine animals, ranging from 1400
to 1700 pounds each. Mr. McOrall
has been using mules for his farm
work, but they were not giving him
the best of satisfaction, so he has dis
posed of the most of them and will
replace them with horses. He Is very
cnthuKlastlc over the future of east
ern Klickitat, and predicts that land
will easily double In the next few
years In his section on account of the
open river and the new railroad down
the north bank of the Columbia.

Want a Carnegie Library.
A meeting of several prominent cit
izens of Dayton was held at the par
lors of Hotel Dayton last Monday eve

ward procuring a public library for
this rlty. The project was favorably
discussed and a committee composed
of Dr. Pletrzyckl, George B. Baker
and T. M. Hanger was appointed to
SLAUGHTER FISH.
Idaho Streams Are Being Depicted by
Settlers.
E. H. Richmond has returned from
the Payette lake country, where he
spent some time In connection with
the work of the state road. He brings
a deplorable story respecting the de
struction of white fish and red fish In
the Puyette river above the head of
the lake. These fish run up the
Btream late in the fall to spawn, the
red fish going first arid the white
fish later, says the Boise Statesman.
Taking advantngo or this fact un
scrupulous people seine the whltcflsh
in vast quantities. Mr. Richmond
saw one man load out a four horse
wagon load of these fish for Baker
City, where he sells them at 12 1-2
cents a pound. Some of the Finns
settled in the lake country have
caught enormous quantities. They se
lect the best for their tablo use and
haul loads of smaller ones away to
their farms to feed to the hogs. A
great many people have taken great
catches. . At one lime some men
stretched seines clear across the
river, stopping the entire run and en
abling them to take out wugon loads
of the fish.
Residents of thin section depend
upon this fish as part of their food
supply. They take perhaps 100
pounds and salt them down. The sup
ply will soon be exhausted, however,
unless steps bo taken to prevent the
wholesale catching, and all who real
Izoathe danger are stirred up over the
matter.
Mr. Richmond says the true name
of this fish Is mountain herring. There
are only a very few places where it is
found, the greatest supply being
found In that lake. He thinks the
catch should be limited to 100 pounds
and that regulations should be made
to prevent Interruption of the run to
the spawning ground. Otherwise the
fish will be exterminated In a few
years, and the country Is settling up
at such a rate that there will soon be
enough of tho unscrupulous fisher
men to destroy the species.

Bond Market Is Laggard.
The bonds for building the sewer
system of North Taklma have not yet
been sold. A provision of the ordi
nance called for disposing of the
bonds at 4 per cent, but the city of
ficials have found some difficulty In
getting any one to take them up at
that rate. The local banks have re
fused to take the bonds and now It Is
believed that unless some outside in
stitution bid them in a higher rate of
Interest will have to be paid. Taklma

The Creamery All Ready.
The creamery building has been
completed and the machinery all In
stalled. A test was made and every
thing worked like a charm, everything
being almost automatic In action. The
building and machinery have been ac

as a competent man Is secured the
creamery will start up. It is one of
the most up-to-date Institutions of the
kind in the country.--Dayton Courier
