A city hall In which the fire de
partment could have headquarters Is
something that would be greatly ap
preciated by J. L. Vaughan, nowly
elected fire chief of Pendleton. When
asked this morning regarding the
needs and plans of the riensrtment
the new chief named tho above as the
most pressing need. In his opinion a
centrally located station where fire
equipment could bo stationed, and
where firemen could make their
headquarters would work Inestimable
good to the department.
Among the advantages that would
result from such a station It would
provide a room In which hose could
be dried after a fire. At nresent it In
difficult during the winter months to
take proper care of the fire hose be
cause there Is no way In which It
may be dried excepting In the sun,
Consequently, there Is danger that
some time a company may respond
to a fire call and find its hum frman
With a properly equipped station hose
couia be thoroughly dried and
cleaned before being returned to its
station.
According to Mr. Vaughan there
would be a great advantage in having
a firemen s room In which memhero
of the department could gather of
evenings or afternoons, the room be
ing in the nature of a club, with pa
pers, cards, etc. With such an if.
rangement the chief believes many of
the men would be nresent of evening.
and ready to respond to a call should
one be made. Also, it would make
the service more attractive.
At present there Is no nrnvlnlnn fne
practice by the dlfforent companies,
as me city has refused to allow any
pay tor such. Conseouentlv. it wn
decided by the companies last sum
mer, that no practice be held. How
ever, company meetings are held
monthly, and also the board of fore
men meets once each month.
At the comnanv meetinea the fnre.
man presides, and subjects pertaining
to the work are discussed. At the
board of foremen meeting the needs
of the different companies are made
known to the chief, who in turn
makes requisition to the council.
A few weeks ago an urgent appeal
was made by Chief Brown for new
hose for Company 7. the old one hav
ing become unfit for service. . How
ever, no action has yet been taken by
the council. . i
In the opinion of the new firs chief
i-enoieton nas one or the best volun
teer companies In the state, in snlte
of obstacles. At fires the men turn
out willingly and work hard, taking
chances of being injured or made 111
by exposure. For this they are paid
1 per hour. However, It Is said that
none of the men really clear anything
trom tneir work when the expense In
curred by them is considered. Con

ter of gratification to learn that hay
