BANKERS PROTEST.
Ooanmlttee Will Walt on the Washing
ton Tax Commission.
Believing that the new method of
assessment proposed by the Washing
ton tax commission will. If adopted,
prove Inimical to the future prosper
ity of the state and discourage the
development of its resources by out
side capital, the executive council of
the Washington State Bankers' asso
ciation, at a meeting held In Seattle
has appointed a special committee to
draw up a statement setting forth the
objections to the system as viewed
from the financial and commercial
standpoint entirely. This document is
to be submitted to the tax commis
sion on behalf of the association
which Includes In Its membership
practically every bank In the state.
It Is stated as the belief of many of
the leading bankers of Seattle that the
new method of assessment Is directly
contrary to the present revenue law,
which would render it inoperative, but
the fear Is expressed that its adoption
by the commission would be a men
ace to the business prosperity of the
state, even If it were contrary to law.
inasmuch as capital is timid when con
fronted with stringent laws.
E. w. Purdy. of Beliingham, will be
chairman of the special committee,
with the following associates: Jacob
Forth. N. M. Latimer, Seattle; P. C.
Kauffman, Tacoma; J. P. M. Rich
ards, Spokane.

vealed a ghastly, secret In her little
cottage on Boyle Heights, says a Los
Angeles dispatch. In a storeroom of
the cottage, covered with rubbish, was
found an hermetically sealed box, con
taining the corpse of her daughter,
who died 27 years ago.
The box Is but three feet long, and
the body of the young woman had
been dismembered. The following in
scrlption was engraved on a silver
plate and nailed on the box:
"Llora L. Thompson; died Decern
ber 16, 1877. Aged 27 years. :
months, 1 day."
The box was opened by an under
taker and a disinterment certificate
signed by F. R. Boutell. undertaker,
Amherst, Mass., November 7. 1881
was found. The body had been disin
terred for shipment to Lodl. Cal., but
was brought to Los' Angeles by Mrs.
Thompson, when he settled here 20
years ago, and has been kept in her
cottage, where she lived all alone.
"SAVED TWO LIVES.'
Local Railroad Men Are Laughing at
the Renorter Who Secured the
Thanksgiving Story.
Local railroad men are wondering
what "passenger, engineer living In
this city" and yet running on No.
the main line O. R. & N. train, had
the escapade related in the morning
paper.
All the engineers on the main line
live In La Orande and none of them
would risk their jobs and their lives
In "reversing their engine while speed
ing down the mountain" Just because
they saw two men beside the track
out of the way of the train and not
giving signals of any kind. The pas
senger trains meet men on every mile
of the division and. none of them
pleaded guilty to having made the
startling stop on the mountain attrlb
utcd to them by the boys on the morn'
Ing paper.
The boys clipped a story from the
colored page of the Chicago Blade,
it Is thought, and forgot to give that
paper credit. - r

Vl'JtY SERIOUS CHARGE
Tomorrow a session of circuit court
will be held for the purpose of dis
posing of the criminal cases now on
hand. Among the cases to come up
will be that of Will Chnpman, who
ran amuck with a pistol Tuesday eye
ing. An indictment charging Chap
man with assault with a dangerous
weapon will probably be filed by Dis
trict Attorney Phelps tomorrow, and
the young man given a chance to
plead.
Also the case of Cramer, charged
with robbing a Weston saloon, will
come up, the prisoner having been
brought down last evening and plac
ed hi the county Jail.
The cose against L. J. Wlnnett,
charged with rape, will likely be dis
missed, as he was married to his vic
tim yesterday.
As the sentence upon Kelly and
Ireland, the Freewater saloon men
was but temporarily suspended by
Judge Ellis when sentence was pass
ed upon them a week or more ago, It
Is said a petition asking for a regular
suspension of sentence will be present'
ed tomorrow. Both men were given
20 days In the county Jail as well as a
fine for having violated the local op
tlon law at Freewater.
INDEPENDENCE WINS.
Eugene Paper Cluinges Its Political
Standard. 1
The Eugene Guard. In changing
from a democratic t an independent
paper, gives the following excellent
reasons for so doing:
It has come to be that the best
newspaper work is done by newspa'
pers that are untrammeled, can dlS'
cuss men and measures with absolute
freedom from party Interference, enn
commend where commendation Is due
or disparage where criticism seems
just.
Politics no longer plays' an import
ant part In our affairs, county, Btate o:
national, recurring elections surely
telling the story that voters larg
vote without regard to party nomina
tions or behests. "
If an unfit man Is nominated, re
publican or democrat, he rarely falls
to hear from the people at the polls.
It was not many years' ego that the
straight ticket was greatly In evlden
"Vote her straight," 'was the cry.
You no longer hear that but election
returns show that voters go to the
polls and vote their '-'party ticket
straight only where they have no
choice among the candidates. '
With this state of facts obtaining
we believe there is not the least ex
cuse for rib-rocked politics or the par
tisan Journalism that finds only fault
with the opposition and everything
for praise In Its own party. The peo
ple want more news, less politics. We
propose to meet the demand.

Well, for the information of thousands or
people who like to know all about a good

means, a destroyer or killer of "Herpes,"
Now "Herpes" is the family name' of a
disease caused by various vegetable par

Headquarters for Good Things to Eat
You should not forget that each day of your life brings you
you nearer to the time when your capacity for earning decreases and
finally ceases. Wliat are you doing toward providing a fund that will
become your mainstay and comfort, anil prevent your becoming de
pendent upon reluctant relatives? '
Prudent people forestall such a possibility by creating a fund for
tfieir declining years by depositing with this bank regularly a portion
of their Income, which, aided by the compound Interest we pay,
makes the accumulation of tlio fund certain.

Nut a Serious Case of Diphtheria Re-
mnlns In Pendleton.
Among other things the people of
Pendleton may be thankful today that
the recent diphtheria scare Is ended,
This morning Special Officer Meeker
raided nil of the remaining quaran
tines excepting the one on the Ward
house, in the east end of the city.
However, the children there are said
to bo suffering from grip as well as
throat trouble, which accounts for the
delay in recovery. ;
In spite of all the fears that were
expressed a week or more ago an
the cry that was raised for the clos
ing of the east end school, the epldem
ic quieted down immediately, there
being but few cases, and none of them
of any seriousness.
