says that he found one of hi observers
busily employed In digging an arte

Chrlsman, who Is located at a point
near Sliver Lake, which is a barren
desert with the exception of a heavy
growth of sagebrush here and there.
Mr. Chrlsman had the well sunk to
depth of 222 1-2 feet and was still
boring away confident that he would
secure a good flow of water. Water
was struck at a depth of 47 feet, but
not in sufficient quantities to reach
the surface.

land tm.'ird, while chocking the grants
In the Lewlston district, discovered
23.000 acres have been lost In tho
stute's selections by reason of home
stead and pre-emption filings and
Indian allotments. These will fur
nish a base for the selection by the
state of lands In lieu. While a large
proportion of these losses were Inev

due to laxity In former administrations
of the land department of the state.
Agent Marvin also discovered that
In the Lewlston district the state has
made application some year ago for
the selection of 2000 acres of valua
ble timber lands, no record of which
was to be found In the Boise office.
The application I on file- with the

of the state contain no record of the
transaction, and until the record at
