The people of this county feel that Secretary Hitchcock has not been cor rectly Informed regarding the Malheur Irrigation project and that the Inland empire, of which Malheur forniB an Important part is unfairly dealt with, nays a dispatch from Ontario to the Oregon Daily Journal. Tho project as planned proposed to riclnln, about 100,000 acres of land. Of this the government is supposed to cwn about 15,000 acres, und the road company about 23,000 acres and pat ented lund owners the balance. Whistler first reported that It would cost less than $30 an acre to Irrigate skis district and lie asked that tho people sign up at that figure. Tho people got together and signed up their holdings as was asked by the government agent. ' Later the govern ment sent in another set of surveyors and then reported that It would cost $42 an acre to Irrigate the territory. The citizens then got together ; and they signed at the new figure. The road company has been the sticking point to all outward appear ances. It has agreed to close out Its holdings within a certain period of time und If at the expiration of that time the same are not closed out then the government shall take the same over and close them out for it. This project is one of the most feasible In the state and there seems to be no reason why it should not be Completed. The territory Is one large plain, with Just enough fall to locate reservoirs and ditches with easy grades over the whole district. The main part of the project Is fed by the Malheur river, but there Is an addi tion of probably 40.000 to 60,000 acres of land which can he reached by Bully creek and willow creek, and that pro ject has an estimate of $24 an acre. The Dalles military road grant cov ers probably one-third of that section and that land Is for sale at the pres ent time. The owners of this grant are anxious to have their land taken Into the Irrigation project and it Is un derstood will comply literally with thu government's requirements. That land Is also surveyed by the govern ment surveyors and there Is no reason why, even If the government will not irrigate the bigger Malheur district, that It will not take up this lesser pro ject and push it to a termination. Edwards And George W. Crocker, whereby the former be comes the owner of a one-fifth inter est in the Grand Ronde coal fields. Mr. Holman states t'-'nt It Is tho Inten tion of the present owners to organize a company nt once to develop the property. The capital of the company will h placed at $t 500,000. It Is the Intention of the promoters to build i narrow guaire line from the mines to Snake river, where barges will be used to convey the coal to Lewlston and Clarktn. Yards for the sale of the coal will be established In both cities. Mr. ' Holman had tests made of the coal in Duluth some time ago, which proved It to be superior to the b'tum Inous variety in heating qualities. Mr. Holman Is largely Interested In the Idaho Reduction company and Is also part owner of a smelter and townslte now Wing built on the shores of Lake Pepd d'Orellle. It Is expected to have the line bu'lt and the product of the mines upon the market by the middle of next summer. The development of thee mines will undoubtedly prove of Immense benefit to the cities of Lewlston, Clarkston and Asotin, as the conl can be laid down at t''ev points at a very low figure. The lack of cheap fuel In this section has been one of the greatest handicaps, but with the placing of this coal upon the mar ket this condition will be remedied ani nnthr asset of great magnitude added to the resources of this section. A message was received today that annr'ior vein of coal had been discov ered on t e Grand Ronde property. The new vein Is located on what Is known .is the Hansen place, some two and n half miles distant from the present tunnel of the company. The discovery of this vein proves beyond nuest'nn that the land In that section Is undrelnld with conl scams and will In some measure hasten the plans of the company In opening up their mines for shipping purposes.
