LEADING DRUGGISTS. ed with the high school team some time during the present season. It Is the Intention to have the mem bers of the squad practice In the gymnasium between 7 and 8 o'clock of evenings. In this way the men may be brought into proper physical con dition, and also have good signal practice. In speaking this morning of the team. Dr. Lytle said that the gymnasium training which nearly all the players have been taking under Director Wilson, will be of great value In the game, as they are already somewhat hardened by the class work and basket ball playing. One of the main reasons for the or ganization of the team Is to have the matter in shape so that a good team can be secured next year. As the sea son is now well along It Is not expect ed many games will be played this year, though as many will be secured as possible. Among other games It Is thought one may be secured with The Dalies. . DISEASE S CHECKED DIPHTHERIA WILL ME OBLITERATED SOON. Commercial National Bank No new cases of diphtheria have been reported today, and from ap pearances the progress of the disease Is about checked. Before leaving this morning for Weston, Dr. Cole, city physician, stated his belief that the wont was over, and that with the quarantine regulations now In force the epidemic would soon be stamped out. Some little resentment is felt by the school authorities over the attacks that have been made on them because of their failure to close the East End school.- In speaking of the. matter this morning Superintendent Traver said that the best interests of the pu pils alone were being considered In the matter, as the pay of the teachers would go on just the same were the school closed. However, he says it is not the custom any longer for schools having proper facilities, such as are now enjoyed here, to close, except In extreme cases. With the excellent ven tilation and the careful attention that is given the temperature of the rooms, he holds that the school rooms are really safer for the children than most any other place. In his opinion there Is much more danger of conta gion from churches, Sunday schools, the theater or stores than from the school room, and In this he'ls upheld by most of the physicians. According to the superintendent the city physician was shown through the East End building but a few days ago, and was highly pleased with the con ditions he found, saying that in most cases children would be better off In school than elsewhere. This morning George Meeker began his duties as special quarantine officer and will strictly enforce the rules against the now houses now flagged. Today the McCulley house was fumi gated, and the same will be done with the Brownfield residence tomorrow as the children In both cases have re covered. Also, the othor children having the disease are all said to be doing well, and In some instances the Illness has been very slight. There are now but seven or eight cases in the city. Epidemic In Portland. ; Dr. C. J. Smith, of the public school board, today talked with Dr. Yenney, health officer of Portland, over the telephone, and was Informed that a slight form of diphtheria such as has been prevalent here, Is also prevalent In Portland, and In half a dozen Wil lamette valley towns, and that while It had been troublesome in several districts of Portland It has not been fatal and the schools are not now closed nor will they be unless It be comes much worse than at present. The report from Pendleton is the first report received at the office of the state health officer from eastern Oregon, and several tubes for the pur pose of collecting exhibits of the worst cases will be sent here and the ex hibits returned to Portland for ex amination. The health authorities do not call the disease diphtheria, although there are dlphtheretlc symptoms and In very few coses has it proved fatal. Orders have been com'ne In fnutnr than local stockmen can supply the demand, with the result that some of the prominent horsemen of this sec tion are soing Into the business nf. raising polo ponies exclusively. Walla Walla Joint Keepers Defy the City Council. Walla Walla. Nov. 23. (Snerlnl After securing legul advice all of the five saloons ordered closed bv the city council at its meeting Tuesday night resumed business yesterday af ternoon, and It Is asserted that they will continue business until the matter is adjudicated In the courts. It Is contended that the order of ths noun. ell is unconstitutional and cannot be made to Btick. However, the council is proceeding, apparently, on the line that it lias the cower to do all that It has done, and a special meeting has been called for tonight, at which time It Is understood Instructions will be given the chief of police to close the five saloons whose licenses were ran. celled or place the proprietors under arrest. PARTNERSHIP DISSOLVED. Judge Lowell -Will Continue Ills Of fices in the Old Quarters. With the appointment of T. G. Hal ley as supreme Judge, the pleasant partnership that has existed between him and Judge S. A. Lowell will be dissolved. A statement to this effect was made this morning by Mr. Hailey, who said that the dissolution of the firm would be the only unpleasant feature of his elevation to the su preme court. However, under the law a member of the supreme court Is forbidden to practice In any state court, and it has also been an un written law that no member shall practice in the fedenU court. Conse quently, Mr. Hailey will have to aban don his practice In this city. Yesterday It was stated that Mr. Hailey would have but seven months to serve, which was an error, as Judge Wolverton's term will not expire un til January, 1907. thus leaving over a year for the new supreme Judge. Judge Lowell said this morning that for the present he will continue hlB practice alone, though several offers of partnership have been made htm. He will still retain the same office rooms, and Dan P. Smythe will con tinue to have his office with him. As to Just when Mr. Hailey will qualify for his new position is not known. However, It Is now said that Chief Justice Wolverton will enter up on til's duties as federnl Judge In about two weeks. In which case Mr. Hailey will at once qunllty as supreme judge.
