AMONG THE EXCHANGES
OF THE INLAND EMPIRE
Yakima Ought to Have Hull Hatdiery.
J. M. Crawford, general superinten
dent of tho fish hatcheries of the
state, arrived In the . city Tuesday
afternoon and remained here over
night lie came here to Investigate
the fish ladder In the Cascade Lumber
company's dam in the Yakima river.
After seeing It ho ald It was of a
good pattern, but perhaps not ade
quate for tho unusually large number
f fish In the river. He was surpris
ed find that there were so many fish,
a circumstance that was not taken In
to consideration by the authorities
when they prepared plans for the
company to go by. He thought at a
very slight expense the ladder could
be made entirely satisfactory, and
will ask that the changes be made.
Mr. Crawford thinks there ought to
be a hatchery on the Yakima river.
He said: "The people here ought not
to have much trouble to get a hatch
ery located hero. All that Is neces
sary Is for some ono to go before the
legislature at its nxt mooting with
a bill forfe hatchery, and I think the
legislature will puss It The fish you
have here is the silver salmon, and is
a very valuable one. Should a hatch
ery be established they will Increase
in numbers and a cannery could be
established and do a large business in
a short time." Yakima Dally Repub-
Head Was Shot Off.
L. Faller, an aged and wealthy
bachelor residing four miles from
Julietta near the Clearwater, met with
a fatal accident at o'clock this even
ing at his home. While engaged In
cleaning a shotgun the weapon ex
ploded and his head was practically
blown away.
Faller, whose wealth is estimated
at 120,000, has no relullves In this
section, but it Is reported he has a
brother or nephew residing in North
Dakota. The old gentleman had been
using the gun during the afternoon,
and evidently thought It was not load
ed at the time he wus engaged In
oleanlng it There seems to be no
suspicion thut be might have com
milled suicide. Lewlston Tribune

tract for the line. Everything In that
part of the country Is In readiness to
commence actual construction work at
once. It is thought that the contrac
tors will spend most of their time dur
ing the winter months In getting out
rock, and that they will begin the
grading work as soon us spring be
gins. Lewlston Tribune.

Wus Wrongfully Indicted.
Curtis Goodwin, who was indicted
for stock rustling, died at Prlnevllle
last week. His brother Lee, who was
Indicted at the same time, was con
victed at the last term of the circuit
court In Prlnevllle, and was sent to
the penitentiary. During the trial It
developed that Curtis Goodwin was
not connected with the crime, and his
brother Lee completely exonerated
him, and the case against him was
dismissed. He never knew this, how
ever, as he was stricken with typhoid
and was delirious to the end. He was
only 18 years old. Madras Pioneer.
