Work Is Being Done Between Town
and the Poor Farm, Rock From
Welch Quarry Being Used.
It is the intention of the county
court to have considerable road work
done within the next few weeks, before
the bad weather sets In. At the recent
meeting of the commissioners consid
erable time was devoted to this sub
ject, and the road graders have been
ordered out for work on the roads of
the western part of the county, where
the land Is light
This morning Commissioner Walker
stated that the graders will be put to
work In the Fulton, Union, Holdman
and Prospect districts, and also that
some work will be done near Echo. It
Is the Intention to have the roads grad

so that they may become packed down
and made into as good condition as
possible for the winter.
According to Mr. Walker this plan
may be successful worked in the light
land district this fall, as the rains that
have already fallen have put tlw
ground Into proper condition for grad
ing. Last year such work could not
. be done successfully as the earth was
so dry that had grading been done th.
roads would have been washed out
by the first rain.
Also, some good work is being done
on the road between the city and the
poor farm. Already the road has been
graded from the edge of town to a
point above the farm, and this morn
ing the work of placing rock was com
menced. This will be dono between
the city and the top of the hill between
McKay creek and Tutullla. Rock is
being taken from the Welch quarry for
the purpose, and after being laid will
be packed down by the steam roller.
When the work upon this road Is com
pleted It Is expected to be In fine con
dition for winter travel. .

Clyde Esterbrook, Joe Bearbaum, Wil

were arrested for gambling, while Tom
Delnney, a carpenter named Swansen
and Unrnhnrt, an Indian, were arrest
ed as witnesses.
According to Marshal Coffman he
became suspicious that a gume was in
progress over the Rainier saloon
through gamblers hanging around that
place. Consequently, he entered the
building through the rear door last
night, und with the other officers
made his way to the room overhead.
However, no guards were found post
ed, nor were the . doors locked. On
entering the room the marshal de
clared the crowd under arrest and
proceeded to make an examination of
the tables. 'There were two of these In
the room, a poker game being In op
eration at each, and in the tablu
drawer the marshal found money
amounting in all to $200 or $300.
At one tablo Steve Noble was deal
ing, while Bearbaum was presiding
over the other. However. Presby is
said to have been running the games,
and that Beurbuum had merely taken
his place for a time. Soon after the
crowd had. been placed under arrest
the different players about the table
cashed their checks, and according to
the marshal these wore paid off by

also to become familiar with the field.

doing the latter.
Great Interest In tomorrow's contest
Is being taken by the high school
peoplo here, and In fact by all others
who follow the game. Also, there Is
every Indication that there will be a
good sited crowd of Pendleton rooters
at the game. A one and one-third
fare has been granted by tha railroad
company on condition that 50 tickets
are sold, and It is hoped that this
number will be exceeded. Quite a
bunch of prominent business men have
made arrangements to go, and will
leave here this evening or tomorrow
morning. In this number are Leon
Cohen, C. E. Roosevelt, Fred Judd, W.
L. Thompson, Tom Thompson, F. W.
Lampkln, J. R. Rnley, II. K. Wilson,
the physical director, and others. Al
so, quite a number of the high school
students outside of the team will go
along to cheer their team to victory.
