PERSONAL MENTION DUBOIS IX THE ORIENT. From Idaho DewTlbes With Toft. Trip SUGAR WAR IS OX. In- Bis light Between Sprcckcl and dctM'iidcnt CoiilMinicH. The arrival of Max Lorenz at the St. Francis Hotel lends additional in terest to the Impending sugar fight between Spreckels' Western Sugar re finery and the Independent planta tions of Hawaii, which are represent ed by the Sugar Factors company of Honolulu, says the San Francisco Ex aminer. The latter some months ago bought for $2,000,000 a controlling Interest in the Crockett refinery across the bay In Contra Costa coun ty, so as to be able to fight the Spreckels combine. Lorenz has been sent here from Honolulu to be superintendent of thut establishment and he will proceed to get things In shape to open it on March 1, 1906. George M. Rolph Is to be business manager of the refln ery. The latter has been closed for a little over two years owing to an agreement with the Spreckels people. That agreement will end on the last day of next February. Spreckels has been paying $200,000 a year to keep the place closed. The Spreckels people have hereto fore demanded of the Hawuiian plan ters and have received a discount of Ihree-elghths cents a pound, equal to 17.50 p. ton of sugar leas than the New York market price. As the amount of Hawaiian sugar sold on the coast equals 150,000 tons a year, this has meant an annual trib ute paid by the Huwalian planters to the Spreckels people of $1,225,000. For this the Hawaiian planters have received nothing. They have paid It simply because it was demanded, and they were not In a position where they could protect themselves against extortion. It Is this enforced tribute more than any other cause that has led to the creation of the Sugar Fac tors company, with the fight now on the tupis. The Sugar Fnctors company con trols S4 0,0iin of the 400,000 tons of the annual sugar crop of Hawaii and has renewed for three years Its contract with eastern refineries to dispose of crop, with the provision of being In his lecture last night at Trinity hall Senator Dubois, who was one of the party of United States senators and representatives headed by Secre tary Taft and accompanied by Miss Alice Roosevelt, which recently re turned from an extended visit in the orient, very vividly and Interestingly carried his audience through oriental cities, picturing scenes and conditions in a very clear cut manner. He do voted the greater portion of his ud drcss to the Japanese and Jupun, says the Boise Statesman. Senator Dubois was introduced by Bishop Funsten In a short but pithy talk. The Taft party left San Francisco on July 8 and made their first stop at the Hawaiian islands. There was not much to see here, said the senator. Agriculture Is about the only Indus try in the islands und yet there Is not as much agricultural land there us in the smallest county in Idaho. All the laud is devoted to sugar plantations. which are cultivated solely by the col ored race. The Hawaiian people are something like the American negro, only mild and according to the views of the senator, the doom of the race is sealed us it will be only a matter of time un til tliey become exterminated. One thing all In the party had agreed upon before leaving Hawaii, sold Senator, Dubois, was that they wanted the ex clusion law changed so that 50,000 Chinese could supplant the 50,000 Jap anese that were In the Islands, as theyj had become disgusted with the Jups. there. Next the party went to Japan, said I the senator, w here they were met by oj delegation of citizens and others who took them to Tokio. The people of, Japan were very warm in their wel come of the Americans and demon strated their feelings In no uncertain way. The party wus entertulned by individuals und nowhere were they sent to hotels. A carriage and driver from the royal palace was placed at the disposal of each member of the party and everything done for their convenience. The first function to which the purty was Invited In Japan was given by the emperor and minis ters. Senator Dubois created a laugh when he described how the members of the party were coached for the oc casion and the manner In which they entered the presence of the mikado.
