At the regular monthly meeting of Jhe city council last, evening, a com mittee of citizens residing near the septic tank, appeared and asked that measures be taken to stop the stench arising from the neighborhood of the tank. The Southern Imlgratlon and Quarantine conference, which opened here this morning, is one of the most Important gatherings ever held In the South and Is attracting the most Intense Interest all through the southern stntes owing to the importance of the subjects which will be consWi-red by the con ference. The object of the confer ence is twofold. One of the objects Is to consider the problem of har mouizitig the quarantine regulations in the southern states, either by some agreement between the vurlous state governments, or by placing them un der national government control. An other Important question Is that con cerning the best methods of attracting desirable immigration to the south, while discouraging ami excluding un desirable Immigration. The convention, which Includes the governors of Tennessee, Louisiana Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida. Kentucky, South Carolina. Texas, Georgia and Arkansas, the presidents of many southern cham bt i s of commerce, boards of trade and other similar organizations, rep resentatives of the agricultural de partments of the various states of the south and of the United States, and delegates appointed by the governors of the southern states, was called to order at the Auditorium this fore noon. Welcoming addresses were deliver ed by United States Senator Frazler, of Tennessee; Mayor Frierson, of Chattanooga, and Mr. L. G. Walker, editor of the Chattanooga Times. The federal grand Jury which convened today has before It the case of Senator Burton of Kansas. The grand Jury is asked to return a new Indictment before the statute of limitations can release Sen ator Burton from further prosecution. He will not rebuild the evaporator on the present site. The new cannery will have a capacity of 1000 cans per dny. Mr. Holcomb acquired an Interest In the Alien Packing company, at Sa lem, In 1900. In 1902 he succeeded that concern with the Salem Canning company, and says they have made money at Salem each year that they have operated here. Mr. Holcomb snys Ills company considers this a good location for a cannery. The new cannery will have the most modern machinery, and will put up a better pack nt less expense.
